    We are stuck with this for a while now. Althought not a critical issue, this problem is totally not environmental friendly.

    Environment we have:
    OS=AIX version 5.3.0.0
    Printer = HP Laserjet 4250n
    Printer Driver selected = hplj-4000 (PostScript)

    When we use this print queue to print a PDF file, it is printed nicely. Problem is, there is always a cover page with the user ID, IP address, date, etc. printed.

    We have already set the "SEPARATOR PAGES" as none in the print queue's "Default Print Job Attributes".

    What else do we need to do to disable the header page from being printed? Do we need to set the "st" and "sh" attribute for the queue to empty?

    Any help will be appreciated. You will be help to save the environment also.

    Thanks.

    Verify the qconfig entry for this printer matches what you have set in the smit default parameters. Also check the _Z parameter. Is it on or off? I would also check the printer itself. Some of these laser printers have the capability of header pages within its own menus which has nothing to do with the OS.

    Unless you are very knowledgeable with the IBM virtual settings and the internals of the printer drivers I would be very cautious when editing virtual parameters.

    We run a few models of HP4000's (HP Jet Direct) but I use the generic driver when setting them up.
    hplj-4000 (PCL).

    hope that helps.

    First of all, thanks for taking time to reply.

    I have checked /etc/qconfig and it seems "in-sync" with the smit settings for the print queue:
    HPPrinter4KPS:
    device = hp@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
    hp@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:
    file = /var/spool/lpd/pio/@local/dev/hp@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX#hpJetDirect#9100
    header = never
    trailer = never
    access = both
    backend = /usr/lib/lpd/pio/etc/piojetd XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX 9100

    I have also telneted into the printer before to check the banner setting. It seems off. Also, printing to the printer via a Windows client does not yield the extra page. Thus i eliminated that possibility.

    The _Z parameter you mentioned, is it a virual attribute? I couldnt seem to find it in "Printer Setup" or "Default Print Job Attributes".

    Thanks again

    Yes that is a virtual setting. You can double check through those parameters but like I said you really need to know what your doing before changing those with the full printer codes.

    Is this an HP JetDirect? If so is the banner set to 0?

    To answer your questions:
    1) Yes, we are printing through the HP JetDirect software and the printer itself supports this driver. Telnet into the printer to check the banner setting:
    TCP/IP - PRINT OPTIONS

    9100 Printing : Enabled
    FTP Printing : Enabled
    IPP Printing : Enabled
    LPD Printing : Enabled
    LPD Turbo : Enabled
    LPD Banner Page : Disabled
    Interlock Mode : Disabled
    Buffer Packing : Disabled
    Write Mode : 0

    Should be disabled base on the "LPD Banner Page".

    2) We are actually printing PDF files using a JAVA library, PDFBox. No much parameters we can pass in except for the printer/print queue name and file to print.

    To update you, today we set the "st" and "sh" virtual settings to nothing, and guess what, the cover page stops coming out!

    But as mentioned, by you, this is done without understanding and we can only cross our fingers it will not cause more problems later.

    Thanks a lot.

    These parameters are saved in a file that you can copy it before editing to cover yourself next time.

    Sorry I wasn't much help.
    Good luck. :)
