For Eg: for p5-590 which supports 254 logical partitions/micro-partitions, if I want to create 40 LPARS running AIX 5.3, do I have to buy 40 AIX 5.3 licenses?

    OR

Is it per processor based? If 590 has 10 processor, I have to buy 10 processor licenses and I can create as many logical partitions/micro-partitions running AIX 5.3 with this 10 processors.

    Your response is appreciated.

    Thanks for your response.

I would like to know one more information.

Is there any IBM website which details on Licensing policies of AIX in logical partitioned/micro-partitioned environment?

    Your response is much appreciated.

Any processor that runs AIX must be licensed for AIX. Just simply add up your dedicated and shared processors.

not sure about where you are, but in the UK I'm reasonably sure that AIX is licensed per frame. So that means that if you've got resources to create 40 SPLPARs, then go for it.

Since you've got a 590, this presumably also means that you've got the complimentary copy of Advanced POWER Virtualization that comes with those systems. In which case, why stop at a mere 40 SPLPARs? ;)

A 590 with only 10 processors - didn't know IBM did one that small, must be a lotta empty space in that system cab!

At the end of the day, your friendly local IBM rep should be able to confirm all of this for you. If not, go talk to his/her boss.

    Thanks for your responses.

    Apologies for the late reply.

    Bob:
10 processor P590 was an example I considered, I am not sure whether IBM actually ships a box with 10 processors.
    Sorry for creating the confusion.

    To Summerize the discussion:
For AIX 5.3 running on power5, AIX V5.3 must be purchased/ordered based on the total number of active processors running AIX Operating System. Once you have licensed active processors you can create as many partitions you can.
