    Posted Tue August 20, 2024 12:47 PM

Hi. Could anyone help me solve this problem. My customer has rent IBM Power 750 (8233-E8B) from my company. He install AIX 7.2 (aix_7200-04-01) and stuck on boot process after ecpvdpd line. H/W seem normal on ASMI.

If there are network and DNS issues, I often see delays around this
time. They can last 10 minutes to an hour, depending on how many NFS
    mounts there are.

In my experience if it gets that far its fine.  Only issue would be a mount that it cant mount.   Boot to safe mode...directions below:

Boot a server into maintenance mode for system recovery from NIM server:

    1.       From NIM master:   smitty nim_mac_op

    2.       Select target client to boot

    3.       Select maint_boot

    4.       Select a spot to use ( same level as client )

    5.       ( Have a vtmenu console window open first )

    6.       Set server to boot in SMS mode

    7.       In SMS set boot options to the network device to boot from NIM server ( set remote IPL and then set boot device )

    Additional:

    1.       Select option-1 "Access a root volume group".

    2.       Select "0" to continue.

    3.       Type a number to display a volume group you think might be root.

    4.       Find the volume group that has the rootvg LVs listed.

    5.       Select option "1 or 2" "Access this volume group and start a shell / or "start shell before mounting filesystems". ( option 1 worked in our last test )

    6.       Set your TERM:  export TERM=vt100

    7.       If commands not available type "exit" once….should then go to where you can enter commands and work on the target systems filesystems.  Seems to need full path for editing any files…be sure to enter full path to target or may give error of "not found" or similar.

    8.       If had to to step 7 re-enter export TERM=vt100 of vt 220.

    Do your repair actions.

When finished type:  "reboot".  ( this didn't work try option 1 to mount rootvg in step 5 )

Then  edit the /etc/filesystems and remark out anything that doesnt have to be mounted ( anything other then OS mounts ).  Also for NFS mounts make sure the mount option is set to soft not hard.  Reboot and it should come up.

Also If you leave it long enough.....10 or 15 minutes....it will eventually timeout and come to a login prompt.

    Hi there,
in my opinion you are probably hitting the typical old problem of AIX (or VIOS/IVM) StandAlone fresh installation from DVD using console with a serial RS232 cable connection on physical S1 or S2 port after a DVD fresh install: you simply are not getting the  getty  login prompt after the last reboot of AIX installation process.
In order to unlock you and have the login prompt you should  start AIX in maintenance mode and add "clocal" to the STTY attributes for login and STTY attributes for RUNTIME using SMIT. (for tty0, tty1 vty0 or whatever you have in your 750 standalone server).
You can find details of the problem/solution here:

You can find more on starting AIX in maintenance mode here(valid also with no-HMC standalone systems booting from physical CD/DVD):

    Hope that helps.
