Customer using Active Directory user authentication.

Upgrade didn't change smb.conf or smb.passwd; smbd and nimd start fine. Any Windows user trying to access a share on the system is prompted to provide user credentials. Whether they use their AD credentials, or their AIX credentials (they are different), the user is told that the credentials are incorrect.

The server should have already been registered in the domain (it was working); none of the AIX or AD credentials have changed in the interim. As I am essentially unfamiliar with Samba, I have been wary to install a newer version; used 3.3.12, as it was delivered with AIX 7.1TL3.

    Where to even start?

You say "the server should have already been registered in the domain (it was working)" .  As you AD administrator if it is part of the domain still.
