    When you say banner of the day, what do you mean? /etc/motd or changing the herald in login.cfg? Or do you mean getting the sshd daemon to display the motd by changing the #Banner line?

    And, what do you mean by WAN connection? Do you mean that if you telnet to the server while the above (whichever one you mean) is enabled you get the login prompt and get kicked off when it displays the message, or do you mean as soon as you turn it on (whatever that is) it drops the network connection?

    The WAN link is a 56k frame link. The backup link is a DSL link.
    Only the WAN link drops when the MOTD starts to scroll.

    If a local telnet session is enabled, same issue transpires.

    What if you just put the word 'hello' (no CR/LF) into /etc/motd, does the behaviour persist?
