    Hi,

I'm new to mainframe (Z/OS) environment. I'm trying to access the free public server ZXplore. It opens the environment on visual studio. I like to work on the (terminal TN3270 eulator) green screen. Can any one help me to setup the environment?

    Joel.

    Hi Joel

Just a quick clarification – IBM Z XPlore is not a "free public server" – it is a no charge membership-based service provided by IBM, for specific purposes related to IBM Z skills development.

The IBM Z XPlore environment was created to help new and experienced mainframe users (developers, administrators, operators) gain or update skills with zOS and other IBM Z operating systems.

The primary interface uses VSCode, to show that zOS is a server environment  where many common functions – searching for datasets/files, editing, compiling, executing programs, submitting and monitoring jobs – can be achieved *without* the need for a tn3270 emulator.

VSCode provides a very consistent environment across Windows, MacOS, and a wide variety of linux – there is much less consistency with tn3270 emulators.

After introducing the mainframe through VSCode, users who achieve the Advanced badge are offered TSO access, with instructions on how to install and setup an emulator.

Users such as yourself, with little or no zOS experience, can learn about the mainframe by working through the Concepts and Advanced challenges and earning the Credly badges.

There are options for accessing TSO sooner -

    Hi Ross,

Thank you for your reply. Actually, I'm an AS/400 professional and I do RPG & COBOL programming. But I'm not familiar with Z/OS environment. I just wanted to know how to work on the environment and practice myself to do COBOL programming.

For AS/400 we have PUB/400 environment that we can access and refresh ourself. I feel that Z Xplore also do that same. Correct me if I'm wrong. In AS/400 also we have RDi just like VSCode. But working on green screen is something different. The thrill working on green screen I never get using VSCode.

I've installed Z Xplore and worked on the VSCode environment. Seriously, I didn't like it. Moreover I feel it's better work on green screen and get familiar with Z/OS and then work on VSCode. So, if possible that I can use TN3270 please guide me.

    Thanking you

    Joel.
