The number of issues encountered when upgrading in the past would lead me to naturally go for the version with the greatest stability, unless the latest version supplies some sort of particular benefit. (Something like support of a later Oracle or MQ version for example)

I don't know how you measure stability. Last year when I first used 8.2.0.3, every time I found a bug/missing feature, IBM provided a patch quickly and these were for issues where there was an easy workaround. I didn't experience any significant problems.

You may want to review the What's New? PDFs to see if there are features you really want. I for one like the ability to use XSD files instead of creating XML type trees. As a consultant, I like to know the latest releases so that is my personal bias.

I personaly had always problems installing the Design Studio, if other packages are added.

With 8.2.0.3 I was not able to start the Eclipse after installing the SNMP package, with 8.2.0.4 I'm still not able to start Eclipse after installing the API. :-( IBM was not able to recreate the issue, but we got some patches which worked more or less.

I don't like to see Java-Exception-Errors when developing Maps, so my preferred solution is 8.1, which is making a faster and more satble impression.

I don't have more problems with the launcher version 8.2 than with version 8.1.x

But my experience is just private nature, none of my customers have 8.2 in a production environment.

Unlike Jim I've been disappointed with the reponse times. It takes (conservatively) twice as long to load simple maps and trees via the eclypse interface. I guess builds weren't that bad but just opening a map or tree should not take as long as it does. The complex HIPAA maps here don't take longer to compile but do take longer to load.

Also did not like that IBM decoupled one of the core components of the design studio, 'Command Server'. We have a number of non-TX systems that execute maps as part of their processes. The Command Server is a somewhat critical and basic part of the Design Studio.
