I think the highest level of AIX the 43p will support is AIX 5.1.
AIX 5.1 is no longer supported by IBM. You may want to reinstall the same level as it is currently running, use the oslevel or oslevel -r command to find the currently installed level.
"and can this be downloaded from passport advantage?"
No, but your business partner or IBM sales person may be able to help you by ordering you a media refresh.
"Also, I am unable to ping this when it is supposedly connected to the network. How do I test the internal network to ensure this is working ok, as the network cable is live and works on another system."
Log on to the 43p and try to ping another machine.
or run diagnostics to the ethernet adapter
or run:
smitty tcpip
and check the network settings.
"I may need to boot from cd if / when I get the OS Disk burned off. How do I change this to boot from cd?"
When the rs6000 banner shows during startup press the F1 or 1 key on the left hand side of the keyboard just after the keyboard icon / message and before the speaker icon / message to get to the SMS menus and then select your boot device or change the boot list, or press F5 or 5 (on the left hand side of the keyboard) for the default service mode boot list which will include the CD-ROM before the hard disks. Search the service guide (see above link) for F5 or SMS for more info.
