As a data scientist, you need to be able to ask questions about data because data scientists spend about 80 percent of their time discovering and preparing data. This is because data science field is a field that is evolving very fast and you have to learn more to keep up with the pace.
You need to regularly update your knowledge by reading contents online and reading relevant books on trends in data science. Don't be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of data that is flying around the internet, you have to be able to know how to make sense of it all. Curiosity is one of the skills you need to succeed as a data scientist. For example, initially, you may not see much insight in the data you collected. Curiosity will enable you to sift through the data to find answers and more insights.
On an other note, I also strongly believe that communication skills also plays a key role for a best Data Scientist because, organizations searching for a strong data scientist are looking for someone who can clearly and fluently translate their technical findings to a non-technical team, such as the Marketing or Sales departments.

The ability (other than technical skills) you can consider to master is the art of curiosity and good questioning ability to become an exceptional data scientist. You may have a whole lot of technical skills and knowledge but you may miss some important inference without proper questioning ability, so investing time in developing curious mindset will be worthwhile.
