Effective Farming - Monitor Crop Growth

Tue August 18, 2020 04:20 AM

The accelerator is created using Data Asset eXchange data to support effective farming by monitoring crop growth using crop guide and provide timely alert to farmers about weather change, possible development of crop disease, evaporation of fungicide, and efficient use of solar panels (agrivoltaics support).

What's included?

  • A structured business glossary of 90 business terms.
  • Sample data science assets

How does it work?

The glossary provides the information architecture that you need to understand weather related business measures. Your data scientists can use the sample notebooks, predictive models and dashboards to accelerate data preparation, machine learning modeling, and data reporting. Moreover, the data scientists may modify the sample notebooks for other business use cases and corresponding datasets.

Timely alert to farmers can save crop life and bring in more cost savings.

When you import the accelerator:

  • The terms are added to your business glossary under the Effective Farming - Monitor Crop Growth category in the Industry Accelerators category.
  • The data science assets are added to a new analytics project.
Crop guide with past weather statistics using Data Asset eXchange data displayed in the sample R Shiny dashboard app.
Alert about possible disease spread, fungicide evaporation, high temperature and solar panel operation. There is also a prediction tab which provides next 5 hour weather conditions.

Prerequisites

Required services: To use the industry accelerators, you must install one or more of the following services on IBM® Cloud Pak for Data

Service Required for
Watson Knowledge Catalog Importing data governance artifacts, such as business terms and categories. See Installing Watson Knowledge Catalog.
Watson Studio Importing data science assets to an analytics project. See Installing Watson Studio.
Watson Machine Learning Deploying analytical models. See Installing Watson Machine Learning.
RStudio Running R Shiny apps. See Installing RStudio.

Importing the accelerator

To use this accelerator on Cloud Pak for Data v3.5.0.0, complete the following steps:

  1. Download the effective-farming-monitor-crop-growth-industry-accelerator.tar.gz file, which is available on the https://github.com/IBM/Industry-Accelerators repository.
  2. Determine how you want to import the accelerator:
    • If your Cloud Pak for Data user account has Admin privileges, all components can be installed by following these steps:
      1. From a command prompt, run the following command to extract the contents of the package:

        tar -xvf {TARFILENAME}

      2. Run the following command to navigate into the folder with the accelerator artefacts extracted from the tar.gz file.

        cd effective-farming-monitor-crop-growth-industry-accelerator

      3. Run one of the following commands to import the accelerator content into Cloud Pak for Data.

Example 1: Run the import in interactive mode. When prompted, enter the required information.

        ./import-accelerator-script.sh

Example 2: For a list of all available options, including how to pass arguments to the import script, enter the command:

        ./import-accelerator-script.sh --help

Example 3: Run the import passing arguments. The following command will: import the accelerator into a project named "Effective Farming Monitor Crop Growth Analytics Project" and import categories and business terms into Watson Knowledge Catalog.

./import-accelerator-script.sh --hostname https://hostname:port --username username --password password --name "Effective Farming Monitor Crop Growth Analytics Project"

Example 4: Run the import passing additional arguments to publish the business glossary terms and run notebook jobs.

./import-accelerator-script.sh --hostname https://hostname:port --username username --password password --name "Effective Farming Monitor Crop Growth Analytics Project" --publish_glossary --run_jobs

    • If you would like to pick which components you import:
      1. Extract the contents of the package.
      2. Import the ZIP file that defines the analytics project to Cloud Pak for Data. The file name should have the following format: accelerator-name-analytics-project.zip.

        See Importing a project.

      3. Import the governance artifacts to Cloud Pak for Data:
        1. Log into the Cloud Pak for Data web client as a user that has the Manage categories permission and the Author governance artifacts permission.
        2. Import the CSV file that defines the categories. The file name should have the following format: accelerator-name-glossary-categories.csv.

          See Managing categories.

        3. Import the CSV file that defines the business terms. The file name should have the following format: accelerator-name-glossary-terms.csv.

See Managing business terms for the business glossary.
