The Process of True Integration

In the last few years, IBM Analytics has built a rich set of capabilities that help thousands of enterprises turn data into decisions.  We’ve done this in three important ways:

  • Hybrid Data allowed our data repositories to efficiently collect and store all types of data and provide fast, scalable and secure access to that data.
  • Unified Governance and our clients tools for organizing data, and making it understandable and available for a broad set of usage scenarios.
  • Data Science and Business provided clients the power to derive insight from data, enhancing existing business models and fueling new models in continuous pursuit of a competitive edge in today’s digital transformation era.

That’s impressive and worthy work but let’s face it: We want our products and offerings to interacted better and more seamlessly with each other. Too often we’ve heard that the individual products are like Lego blocks with contacts that aren’t worn enough to connect with ease. Or worse, the contact shapes don't match and they require expert knowledge to put them together. This has been a need for as long as I can remember and that is, unfortunately for me :-), a long time. But we weren’t able to address it to our satisfaction . . . until now.

It's common knowledge that it often takes a technology or business breakthrough to create the conditions that allow you to deliver a long-standing objective. Think of the advances in AI that eluded the industry for decades until a perfect storm of factors shot us forward, the availability of huge amounts of data, practically unlimited computing resources, new algorithms, and an ever-present need to find that competitive edge. In the same way, the stars have finally aligned to make the experience of composing solutions with our ‘Lego blocks’ exactly what it should be, fast and enjoyable.

I’m talking about IBM Cloud Private for Data (ICP for Data). What's the secret? ICP for Data requires conditions and common denominators for all software components running in its context. Those requirements unify the experience of finding, deploying, installing, administering and, in general, running the ICP for Data components. ICP for Data mandates containerization of software components, interactions driven by microservices, and the use of common core services such as authentication, authorization, logging, auditing, monitoring, metering, and more. The mere fact that each individual product must adhere to these conditions brings us a long way toward integrating our portfolio, providing that dearly-needed common look-and-feel, and enabling clients to compose analytical solutions in a way that’s fast, efficient, and enjoyable.

Of course, ICP for Data has many other value propositions and we'll continue to provide blog postings in the future to cover all of them, but facilitating integration is for me its ‘killer’ feature.

This doesn't mean it’s an easy or trivial exercise, but we’ve never had a better chance of accomplishing this goal. We’re going to drive ICP for Data forward, and use ICP for Data as a cohesive force to deliver the integrated experience that has been needed for many years. It starts with understanding what it takes to bring on board a product or component to ICP for Data.

We will be the agents of the most significant technology inflection in years. And we think you’ll enjoy being a part of it.
