Scaling Db2 across your enterprise with QReplication and Amazon RDS for Db2

In today’s dynamic business environment, organizations require high availability of data to make agile, savvy decisions. They cannot afford to compromise the availability of their data. Indeed, Forrester has estimated that 50% of all enterprises could not survive a system failure. Furthermore we are experiencing an explosion of data: it is estimated that we create roughly 33 quintillion bytes of data each day(that’s 18 zeros for those counting). This exponential growth (and cost) of storing data, the requirement for up-to-date data, and the need to utilize this data to implement accurate AI across the enterprise are some of the factors incentivizing organizations to migrate their data/applications to cloud-based datastores.

Amazon Web Services Relational Database Service (AWS RDS) is a leader in cloud managed database services. AWS RDS benefits include simplicity and speed in setting up and operating a database, reduced IT costs, and improvement in overall data management efficiency. AWS RDS also includes built-in security features such as encryption and access controls ensuring data is protected from unauthorized access and breaches.

Best of both worlds: AWS RDS and IBM Db2

IBM Db2 is the leader in managing vital business data and is the trusted backbone of business-critical workloads and applications.  Being built on decades of innovation in data security, scalability and availability, enterprises use Db2 to keep their data protected, highly performant and resilient, anywhere. AWS RDS for Db2 is a fully managed Db2 database service that allows users to quickly set up, operate, and scale Db2 on AWS while retaining the power, flexibility and compatibility of Db2. It combines the best of AWS RDS and Db2.

Today, we announcing a significant step in helping users maximize value from Db2 in a hybrid cloud environment with the extension of QReplication (QRep) support for AWS RDS for Db2.

What’s new?

IBM’s QReplication, a core technology of the IBM Data Replication portfolio, captures Db2 database changes as they happen and delivers these to Db2 target databases ensuring both databases are synchronized with zero impact on the source system.

IBM QReplication enables customers to:

 Improves business insight: Feeds real-time, business-critical data into the Db2 target database for live reporting, further processing and analytics.

 Supports continuous availability: Synchronized Db2 Database provides continuous availability for business-critical applications in the event of planned or unplanned outages of the Db2 source database

 Enhances workload distribution: Enables load balancing for scalability and data proximity to clients.

With this latest announcement, QReplication users can now replicate between their existing Db2 environments and Db2 on AWS RDS - creating new value for Db2 on RDS.

This new release unlocks support for:

  • Unidirectional and bi-directional replication from
    • Db2 LUW  <-> Db2 on RDS
    • Db2 on RDS <-> Db2 on RDS
  • Supports different Db2 versions on source and target
  • Supports continuous near real-time data synchronization with zero downtime of source databases
  • Active-Active. The AWS on Db2 target database is a not a passive standby – both source and target can be fully utilized for both read and write improving efficiency and cost

What does this support mean?

QReplication support for AWS RDS for Db2 means users can now seamlessly move huge quantities of data in real time from their existing Db2 portfolio to Db2 on RDS for workload distribution, real-time business insights, workload distribution, and continuous availability, thereby maximizing utilization of Db2 on RDS with zero impact to source systems. QReplication enables customers to integrate their Db2 on RDS instances into their Db2 ecosystem and ensure data flows freely to where it is needed in the enterprise.

QReplication support for bi-directional data replication between Db2 systems and Db2 on RDS unlocks additional capabilities for users. Bi-directional data synchronization means any changes made to the on-prem or RDS-based Db2 are made to both systems ensuring data accuracy and consistency across disparate systems for improved decision making across the enterprise.

Bi-direction replication between Db2 systems and AWS RDS for Db2 improves collaboration between teams working on different platforms in different parts of the world by providing consistent up-to-date data to support accurate decision making.

The extension of QReplication (QRep) support to Amazon RDS for IBM Db2 allows organizations to benefit from the combined simplicity of the Amazon RDS fully managed service, the reliability and flexibility of IBM Db2, and the power of QRep’s real time data integration capabilities, ultimately empowering businesses to greatly lower their costs and scale their data

Building an open and trusted data foundation is core to scaling and accelerating AI in an enterprise. IBM Data Replication, along with the other components of IBM’s Data Fabric architecture, enhance the availability and quality of organizations’ data. With newly added QRep support to Amazon RDS for IBM Db2, users can scale their Db2 data and processing capabilities to meet the needs of their growing business while benefitting from a fully-managed Db2 cloud database service.
