Unraveling patterns and relationships in your Db2 for z/OS data: A simple example for getting started with SQL Data Insights

SQL Data Insights (SQL DI) is a new feature that is built into the Db2 for z/OS engine. The feature combines deep learning in artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced IBM Z technologies to infuse the Db2 engine with SQL-based semantic queries on user tables and views. To put it simply, SQL DI uses a database embedding technique to train a neural network model on a Db2 table or view and then deploys the model natively to discover patterns and relationships that are otherwise hidden in the columns and rows.

SQL DI is easy to use. This article intends to provide a simple example of how you can quickly get started with SQL DI to discover insights that are hidden in your Db2 data. Assuming that you have already completed the installation and configuration, the article will guide you, step by step, through the entire workflow of using SQL DI. Using the Db2 table in a sample data set, it will show you how to quickly perform the following sequence of tasks:

  • Getting the sample Db2 table ready for use
  • Connecting SQL DI services to Db2 where the sample table is
  • Creating an AI object from the sample Db2 table
  • Enabling the AI object for AI queries
  • Running queries on the AI object
  • Analyzing data to understand query results and insights
