Do you use query tuning capabilities like index advisor, query rewrite, and access path advisors?

When are you most likely to use query tuning capabilities?

    • Application development (new/change of application code)
    • DBA review of application development change
    • reactionary (performance problem in production or late phase testing)

We use all of the advisors included with Query Workload Tuner, but we get the most benefit from the Index Advisor.   We use QWT in all of the use cases that you stated in the question.

Mainly use query rewrite and statistics advisor as most problems are due to missing/incomplete stats.

Also use the Virtual Index feature - please make this feature no-charge :-)

Most of my tuning is reactionary, for some critical applications we are lucky and get to do it during development.

We use index advisor and access path advisor, seldom the query rewrite feature. Mainly when a performance issue appears.

Do you have any news about the future for index-advisor functionality in

    1. "Data Server Manager"
    2. "IBM DBb2 Data Management Console"
    3. "IBM DB2 Administration Foundation"

The Index Advisor is essential for DBA in tuning thousands of long running SQL queries

    Hello Jesper,

The Index-advisor capability for tuning single SQL as well as SQL Workloads will be made available through the Query Workload Tuner for zOS (API enabled service) and the User experience is being built on Db2 Administration Foundation. Work is underway and the User experience work will be delivered in phases through 2023.
The Db2 Developer Extension for z/OS which is the strategic Application development platform for Db2 for z/OS will also support the capability for Application Developers to invoke certain single query tuning advisors like the Index advisor, access path advisor, query rewrite advisor, stats advisor, SQL Annotator and visual explain.

Do yu use Data server manager or Data Studio for query tuning today? Let me know if you'd like to chat more on this topic.

    Regards,

    Hi Sowmya

It is good news to hear that Index-Adbisor will be built in into Administration Foudation.

The API enabled service is not an option for our developers.

The developers have to have a GUI interface as in Data server manager and Data Studio.

As we use Data Server Manager today, we are looking forward to see Index Advisor integrated into Administrator in the future.

    Best wishes

Mainframe databases often need to comply with various regulations, and Birth Certificate Attestation is one of those crucial compliance requirements in some regions. DB2 Tools for z/OS includes features that assist in data auditing and reporting.
