I’m very excited to tell you about a new offering for Db2 for z/OS administrators, announcing on June 8th and generally available on June 18th.  Db2 Administration Foundation for z/OS delivers key management capabilities to support different Db2 for z/OS users. This cornerstone of the transformation of Db2 Tools for z/OS will, over the next several releases, replace many Data Studio features and administrative functions from Data Server Manager.

This Db2 for z/OS product is built on a modernized architecture that includes a z/OS server platform, a zero-client install, and the z/OS security on which business depends. The User Interface is browser-based and built on top of the open source Zowe Virtual Desktop.  (Read more about Zowe.)

Db2 Administration Foundation removes the complexity of individual tooling that can make the learning curve steep for new Db2 users and helps reduce the potential for errors and time to respond. With this offering, you can share technology and data without worrying about individual product boundaries.  Task-based functionality means that you no longer need to know or remember individual product features or procedures.

Some specific features in this first release include:

  • Intuitive, familiar web desktop interface
  • Modern SQL and Db2 command interface
  • Intelligent Db2 search, navigation, and user-driven administrative actions

Future releases will add features to provide Db2 Analytics Accelerator administration, SQL tuning services, and more.  While there is no charge for the Administration Foundation license, most customers will want to purchase optional subscription and support.

You may order Db2 Administration Foundation (5698-ADF) on ShopZ.  Alternatively, if you’d like to experiment a little before placing your order, please visit the IBM Z Trials website.  On the product availability date of June 18, there will be a Trial under the Database and Application Server category so you can try out the features without installation.

Finally, your feedback is vital to us and helps us make decisions at strategic and tactical levels on investment priorities and product design.  Let us know what’s most important to you in managing Db2 for z/OS through forums like this week’s IDUG North America conference, Db2 for z/OS and Tools Customer Advisory Council sessions, or as a sponsor user.  Your input helps shape the direction of the next generation of Db2 Tools for z/OS, and I can’t wait until we can be together in person, trading ideas once more.
