IBM Db2 for z/OS Data Gate (Db2 Data Gate) offers a new approach to access and get value from Db2 for z/OS data with little or no impact on the core transaction processing on IBM Z. Db2 Data Gate extracts, loads and synchronizes mission-critical data from Db2 for z/OS to Db2 on IBM Cloud Pak for Data for quick access by new, high volume, read-only applications.

Db2 Data Gate provides an integrated, resilient, standardized approach, designed to be more reliable, less complex, and less expensive than customized solutions for synchronizing Db2 for z/OS data between source and target.

For high value, revenue generating transactional applications, there is no better solution architecture than one that directly leverages Db2 for z/OS. There are many services, however, that financial institutions are required to provide, but do not generate incremental or net new revenue. These include mobile banking applications that facilitate high volume short-running queries where customers are regularly looking up their account balance, a typical read-only access. It is this increasing need for data from the system of record that drives organizations to replicate data to various targets for applications to consume. Clients end up spending even more resources to maintain and manage copies of data for transactional consistency, data currency, and security control.

The integrated data synchronization protocol of Db2 Data Gate is fully zIIP-enabled, lightweight, high throughput, and low latency to achieve near real-time data access without affecting the performance of Db2 for z/OS. Data synchronization can start instantly after a new Db2 Data Gate instance is provisioned, which takes less than 10 minutes through guided panels on Cloud Pak for Data. The instance dashboard provides key metrics to ensure the expected performance of data synchronization and useful tools to take corrective actions if needed. Application developers can leverage their existing Db2 application development skills to access the synchronized data in Db2 on Cloud Pak for Data.
