With Db2 on Cloud Pak for Data, you can manage your data on a single platform, providing you with enhanced flexibility to modernize your apps, powerful analytics capabilities, and the security of keeping it all in one place.

A brief background of Db2 and Db2 Warehouse

Many of our everyday transactions use relational databases to store and retrieve important data for banking, manufacturing, and retail activities. Activities such as paying with a credit card, accessing our bank accounts, buying products or services online, are just some examples. In 1983, IBM launched the Db2 product line to provide a relational database that our customers could use to leverage this vast business opportunity.

In the 1990s, IBM introduced Db2 Warehouse - a separate, relational database product intended to run analytics processing for large data sets. With Db2 Warehouse, customers could offload their analytics processing tasks, while configuring Db2 to focus on their transaction processes.

Today, Db2 and Db2 Warehouse are popular database products in government, banking, insurance, and manufacturing industries due to their reliable functionality, trustworthy security, and low downtime. Both Db2 and Db2 Warehouse can run transactional data and analytics, but each offers specialized tools and features catered to their intended purpose:

  • Db2 for online transactional processing (OLTP)

  • Db2 Warehouse for online analytics processing (OLAP)

Why should I deploy Db2 on Cloud Pak for Data?

Cloud Pak for Data users can use the Db2 and Db2 Warehouse services to get all the same Db2 and Db2 Warehouse capabilities on a single platform. This means that you can achieve a view of all your data and insights without duplicating your data, moving it around, and potentially exposing it to security risks in the process. This also means that you can free up your data science team to focus on strategic initiatives and model building, rather than manual data cleansing and manipulation.

Customers who want to more easily modernize their applications are migrating data sets to Db2 databases on Cloud Pak for Data because it provides a hybrid architecture. This architecture allows applications to be developed faster, be more available, and be more scalable for future business growth. Db2 is compatible with multiple file formats and features a centralized view for all ongoing analytics and AI processes.
