Back in the days of Cognos 8 and early 10, Cognos used to come with Tomcat embedded to act as the default application server. You also had the option to use your own Websphere Application Server (WAS) in place of Tomcat, if you wished to.
In modern versions of IBM Cognos, the Tomcat component is replaced by WLP - Websphere Liberty Profile - which acts as the application server. WLP is a lightweight version of Websphere and is tuned for the kind of use Cognos requires. There is no longer an option to use your own WAS in place of it, as there was previously.
WLP installs under the covers as part of a regular Cognos install - there is nothing you need to do separately to install it.
Hope that helps.
MF.

Subject: WEBSPHERE with Cognos
Hi,
I am sorry, but probably a bit ignorant here, but placing a question here as a cient has indicated that they have websphere installed with their cognos .. but I am failing to understand the relationship between cognos and websphere.
Lots of docs say it is a application server .. but does it have to be installed seperately to cognos, or is it installed as part of cognos ... not wanting to do so if it is not, but am a bit baffled with what it is and how it relates to an installation of cognos.
Apologies if I sound a bit dumb
