  • 1.  Dimension...has invalid rules.

Hello, I'm having an issue when I try to update a dimension hierarchy by pasting a value in from Excel. For instance, when I copy a value in Excel then try to "Add" to the hierarchy, whether I select as a Child, Parent, Before Selection, or After Selection, it gives me the error "Dimension [dimension name] has invalid rules." This was never an issue when using the Classic dimension editor, but just started with the recently updated editors. I've tested Safari, Chrome, and Firefox and all have the same issue. It also occurs on all dimensions in our cubes.

Is there a setting that needs to be adjusted to correct for this? Some other solution? Any help here is appreciated!

    Hi Stephen,

The new dimension editor supports pasting multiple new members from Excel on your first paste.

Then you  can paste single members to the hierarchy from Excel. You'd need to commit the newly added members.

Hi Svetlana, thank you for responding! I'm not able to get to the point where I would commit the members. The error happens immediately after I try to paste the elements. I've taken a screen recording so you can see when/where/how the error occurs. I've uploaded the recording and also included a youtube link below where I have saved it. Hopefully, one of these videos will work for you. Thank you in advance for any further help you can provide!

    Hi Stephen,

Just use click/paste (Ctrl+V) and the multiple members copied from Excel would be added according to your choice in the new Dimension Editor.

As for the message you're getting, we were not able to reporoduce. Fell free to log the case if it's still not working for you.

    Best regards,

    Hi Stephen,

Let's say that you have two dimensions, let them be DimA and DimB, and both are part of a cube, CubeOne. Later on, you add a member to DimB, let's say ElementA, that already exists in DimA, and ElementA is part of the rules in CubeOne. If ElementA is not fully qualified, that is ['DimA':'ElementA'], you will have an ambiguity problem and the CubeOne rule will fail. Therefore, you will not be able to update DimB, because a rule validation error. Must of the time is not that obvious. Hope this helps.

    Regards.

    Hi Stephen and Jose,

Thank you for your posts. The error is coming form the tm1 server side and it'd be necessary to see the Logs messages.

I'm looking  in message improvement to identify the problem better.

    Best Regards,

P.S. Stephen, if you could post the related log errors and which version are you using v11 or v12, I'd log the enchancement accordingly.

Hi Sveltana and Jose, thank you for following up. Apologies for not responding sooner. It seems that this error was arising because I was trying to copy the elements from a virtual machine via Parallels but then pasting into PAW (in Chrome) directly on my Macbook outside of the virtual machine. Not sure whether it is a Parallels, Macbook, or PAW issue but I figured out if I do all of the above within the virtual machine (i.e. copy from Excel and paste into the dimension hierarchy) it works just fine. For some reason it just doesn't like when you cross from a virtual machine over to the Macbook. Regardless, I have it working now just fine. Thank you!
