Datasets are only available from the context menu of a package or module. I don't remember the actual capabilities needed, but if you can make reports you probably have it.

Create a dataset with the SQL as the source. You'll still need to select a package or a module as the source for the dataset, but once you do go to the queries pane
Then drag the SQL object to the right of the query
At that point you just select your datasource and paste in your SQL. Schedule the dataset as required, and use that as the source for your dashboard.

Is it possible to refresh a dashboard with data returned from a custom sql query?
I created the dashboard using the csv table with the data from the query uploaded manually. I would like to automate the daily refresh of the dashboard running the custom sql query on a schedule.
