  • 1.  PAW work ergonomics, input dates and numbers

    Hi

I am interested in work ergonomics when especially when inputting data, using the mouse, keyboard shortcuts, and so on.

    1. Is there a way of formatting date-fields for manual input without using the date picker?
    - The date picker is not performing well in our PAW environment and users are complaining.

    2. Is it possible to format the input of text-fields for capital letters?

    3. Is it possible to use the computer's regional settings for number-formats and date-formats
    - Currently, this seems dependent on the browser's language and is variating between browsers.
    - For example, you would like to have your browser language in English but date and numbers according to your region
    - The Icelandic date format is dd.MM.yyyy and the decimal point is a comma "," ( 1.000.000,00 )
    - This is important e.g. when copying data to and from Excel

    Thanks, Asgeir

    1. I don't think there is a way to disable the datepicker on numeric cells formatted as dates. If you want to get around it you could perhaps instead use a string cell, obviously it can't be formatted as a date but you could use a picklist to force users to only supply valid dates (they could still just type them in.) You could then keep your numeric cell and rule the values over from the string cell.

    2. If you put the format c:>&&&&&&&&&& on a string cell it will display the text in Uppercase (note that the 10 & symbols mean it would work for up to 10 character but you can put as many & symbols as you want.) I don't know of a way to force it to display only the first letter as Uppercase though, it would be all or nothing.
There are more details about that style of formatting HERE.
Note also that in the back of the system it will still be lower/upper as per how the user types it in, the formatting only changes how it is displayed.

I posted a couple of weeks ago that the regional settings (especially for dates) are 'broken'. We're in the UK and although Apps and Plans tells a user to enter a date in DD/MM/YY - PAW gets it wrong as soon as the they hit enter - registering only dates over 12 days as being non US. To top that, the date when 'edited' won't accept the date amended, instead punting the required date out by around 3 years.

Unfortunately - IBM never bothered to reply - so the only advice for dates on non US regions I could suggest is to use the date picker .. it's not ergonomic, but it may just save your customers the pain of a headache from repeatedly slamming it against their keyboard whilst shouting "no, No, NO!".
