11.1.7 FP1 External Data

    Hi Everyone, 

    I am new to the community.  I just upgraded my sandbox environment to 11.1.7 FP 1.  We are having a problem with External Data, and I'm not sure if it is because of the upgrade, or a problem with my sandbox environment.  We can pull in Excel 97-2003 Worksheets (.xls) okay, but if I try to pull in an Excel 2007 Worksheet (.xlsx) it is failing.  In the report they are getting an error indicating that the login failed.  If I try to add a file through Manage External Data I'm just getting a blank error box.  In the log files I see error messages indicating a failure with a message of "org.apache.poi.ooxml.POIXMLTypeLoader".  

    Has anyone else been able to access Excel 2007 Worksheets as an external data source?  Any ideas on what I should try?

    Looks like an issue in the version of Apache POI. Suggest you open a ticket with customer support.

    Thank you Nigel!  I have opened a case with customer support.  I just upgraded a second environment last night, and we are having the same problem there.

    In case anyone else comes across this issue, IBM agrees that this is a bug in 11.1.7 FP1 and they have created an APAR to address the issue.

    The APAR is PH30937.  I do not have a link for the case yet.  We converted our XLSX files to XLS and updated the packages to accommodate the different file format to allow us to move forward.  Good luck!

    Do you know if this only impact excel 2007 files or is it impacting any version of excel 2007 and greater?  Thanks.Kay

    Yes, it appears to impact any Excel file 2007 and greater - anything with an XLSX extension.

    I'm trying to reproduce the issue without success.  XLSX files seem to work fine with data modules and dashboards.

    Same for me, I cant reproduce this error either.
    Any chance someone could detail how you are seeing this error? Is it when you directly upload a file or when its done within report studio or actioned through a data module?
    I'm scheduling our 11.1.7 upgrade to take place in a couple of weeks so would be good to know where the issue lies.

    We are able to upload XLXS files through the "Upload Files" option without any issues at all.  The issue occurs when we use the "Manage External Data" option when customizing a package within Cognos.

    1. Add a package to a new report.
    2. Right click on the package and select "Manage external data...".
    3. Select an Excel 2007 format file (XLSX).  
    This is where we get the error message.  If we select an XLS file, we are able to proceed.  Hopefully, that helps to clear up the confusion.  I did perform an over the top upgrade - I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.
