Cognos Analytics 11.2 delivers a dynamic new user experience

I'm really excited to talk about the incredible new user experience that has been delivered with IBM Cognos Analytics 11.2.  This UX is based on IBM's Carbon Design System, IBM's open source design system for products and digital experiences.

The main changes you'll see in Cognos are a stunning new home page that helps new users become productive quickly, while letting advanced users get directly to where they want to go.  There is a powerful new hamburger menu for globally avilable actions.  The content browsing has also been completely changed.  Gone are the narrow slide-out panels, they have been replaced with a full-page browsing view that let's you see so much more information.  And finally, you'll see some general changes through the rest of the product that make working with Cognos more delightful than ever!

Let's take a closer look.

The New Home Page

The default Cognos 11.2 home page looks like this: (Look out for an upcoming blog about customization, where I will show you how you can change virtually everything here to suit your organization.)

It is divided into 3 main sections:

The welcome banner: This is the dark section at the top.  This is great for first time users, as it has a link to an overview video and let's cloud customers launch one of our interactive tours.  You can dismiss this with the X at the top right.

The quick launch tiles: These give you instant access to creating content in Cognos.  The tiles will match the capabilities of your role, so you only see tiles for features that you have access to.

The home tabs: There are 2 tabs.  A 'Get started' tab with tons of useful links for new users.  Its got pointers to lots of videos, the learn panel, samples, and so much more.  These are incredible resources that will turn you into a Cognos expert in no time.  There is also the 'Recent' tab, which shows all your most recently accessed assets.  Cognos will remember what tab you were on last, so you'll always see your favourite tab when you log into Cognos.

The Hamburger Menu

No matter where you are in Cognos, you'll have access to the hamburger menu at the top left of the screen. From here you'll be able to create any kind of new asset in Cognos, browse through your existing content, view recent content, and manage your Cognos instance.  And we've also made search available in the top banner, so you can access it from anywhere at anytime while you're in Cognos.

Full-Page Content Browsing

We've made browsing your Cognos content even easier.  Just pick 'Content' from the hamburger menu and you'll be in our new full-page content view.

You can see all the important information about your content at a glance in either tile or list view.  And for those of you with lots of assets, you can use Short or Compact mode to really make the most of your screen's real estate.

Open the Details panel to see more information on an asset and the main actions you can launch.  When you click on another asset the panel automatically updates.

You can perform bulk operations like deleting several items at once.  Just multi-select using the shift key or the checkboxes.

Other Changes

You'll also see some smaller changes in dashboards, explore, data modules and reporting. All toolbar buttons that are specific to the component now sit right below the main banner.

For example, here in dashboards, you've got the buttons for switching between editing and consumption mode, saving, sharing and more all in one simple toolbar.  And the assistant is accessed from this icon near the top left.

That's just an introduction.  Almost all of the Cognos UIs have been updated to the modern IBM Carbon UX standards.  The result is both intuitive and beautiful!
