IBM Cognos Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Cognos Workspace

By RACHEL SU posted Fri January 06, 2023 10:02 AM

IBM Cognos Query Studio is an ad-hoc querying and reporting tool for creating simple lists in IBM Cognos Analytics. IBM Cognos Analysis Studio is a dimensional analysis tool for exploring, analyzing, and comparing dimensional data. IBM Cognos Workspace allows users to assemble dashboards using existing report parts. All studios were designed and implemented prior to Cognos Analytics 11 version.

To simplify our offerings and to provide better self-service user experience, Cognos Analytics 11 introduced AI infused interactive dashboarding and delivered major usability improvements in enterprise reporting. As such, Query Studio, Analysis Studio and Cognos Workspace have not been enhanced since Cognos 11 and we have no plan to further improve these legacy components. Their conformance level will remain unchanged.

IBM Cognos Analytics with Watson version 11.2.4 (long-term support) is the final release that includes IBM Cognos Query Studio, IBM Cognos Analysis Studio, and IBM Cognos Workspace. See announcement letter here.

We recommend customers to migrate their users and workloads to modern components such as Cognos dashboards and reports. Feature comparison documents are available to help customers to further understand how to leverage modern capabilities to perform equivalent BI tasks.

As a reminder, Query Studio and Analysis Studio assets do continue to render automatically in Cognos report viewer without recreation. Assets can also be manually converted to Cognos reports for future modifications. We have also developed a feature to allow customers to convert assets in bulk.

Some good point and question from @Giovanni Mazzucatobelow.

We are in the same situation extensively using PowerPlay Studio with 100+  users and no obvious path going forward.

It would be very useful to get some directions from IBM. The pressure from the competition is real.

Are there any plans to introduce a replacement for the Workspace features in the future? These features are heavily utilized in my organization, and it appears that we will need to remain on version 11.2.4. Reproducing the functionality of Workspaces in dashboards would be extremely costly, if not impossible, as the visualization settings are significantly limited compared to Reporting. Workspaces provide a convenient way to display objects from different reports in one centralized location.

While there are comparisons available for Query Studio and Analysis Studio, it seems that there is a lack of equivalent focus on finding a suitable replacement for Workspaces. This is concerning as Workspaces are a powerful feature in Cognos that cannot be easily matched by other products on the market.

All the comparisons are for query studio and analysis studio, but it seems that there's no similar attention to a workspace replacement which is a powerful feature in Cognos that cannot be matched by other products in the market.

The fact that Analysis Studio isn't being replaced, may well force us to move away from IBM for our data/analytics platform altogether.  A business person with no experience or interest in reporting, analytics or databases, can sit down in front of Analysis Studio and find what they want just by pointing and clicking.  Reporting is a completely different product, for a different type of user.  You've replaced Report Studio, but not Analysis Studio.

Hello Rachel,

in the appreciable document you indicated (Comparing Analysis Studio and Query Studio features with Reporting and Dashboards features) Analysis Studio is compared with Report Studio.
Unfortunately Report Studio is an authoring product and its use is not conceivable for an average Cognos user. They are therefore not comparable as product features.
Considering that the objective of the large Olap user Cognos population is free analysis, the use of the ReportStudio output is not in line with expectations. Similarly in Dashboard, the absence of a Visualization capable of competing with the Crosstab present in Analysis Studio or PowerPlay Studio, e.g. the collapse of the elements that can be exported to Excel also makes this comparison unacceptable for the average Olap user.

From my point of view, the only comparable solution, even if immature (see point b. below), remains the implementation of Planning Analytics cubes, whose adoption however is limited for:
a. from the cost of the licenses, for which a read-only role would be desirable for all those who use Analysis Studio today
b. the functions present in the Dashboard of PA are not yet the same as in CA
c. from the still non-community of the CA and PA portals
d. the cost of rebuild Transformer models in Planning Analytics

Do you think IBM can think about adopting part of the points mentioned above?

Thanks

What's in the roadmap to allow users to assemble dashboards using existing report parts ?  This feature is heavily used in my organisation and dashboards do not provide the ability to add widgets with parts of existing reports.

@Patrick Neveu you're totally right.. we've been using Powerplay since end of 1990s when it was Powerplay Client version in fact.... we spent years training our users on Analysis studio but keeping our Powerplay users as well... We tried Report in Cognos 11 but not exactly the same experience as Analysis studio when you drill inside a cube... same as powerplay ... Query Studio easy to replace.

Hi @Walter Fascio

PowerPlay is a quite old product, you are right, but it was also a bestseller.

Many clients are still using it as long it will be possible. That why there is a new Cognos PowerPlay Server 11.2.4-22100709.

Query Studio and Analysis Studio are easily replaced.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Rachel,

something I still do not understand, Query Studio , Analysis Studio will disappear in the future (replaced by Report/Dashboard) but Powerplay will remain : an older tool than Query/Analysis Studio. I do not understand the logic of IBM on BI products.

thanks !!

Hi Kim,

There isn't an equivalent component with feature comparison available for Cognos Workspace unfortunately.

Customers can run reports individually or recreate the content in Dashboard and perhaps allow drill through to different reports instead.

In the Feature comparison document is see the comparison of Query and Analysis Studio to Report studio.  Is there a similar comparison to help guide customer who need to convert Workspace Dashboards?  I know we will be asked for that information. Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,

We have no plan to deprecate Event Studio. It has many important capabilities our customers and partners rely on.

Hi Rachel,

Can you give us any hints as to the future of Event Studio? It also hasn't been updated in a long, long time. Would hate to be blindsided with a similar announcement for Event Studio.

Thank you.
