Increased Collaboration with Slack Integration in IBM Cognos Analytics 11.1!

By MOHAMMED OMAR RASHEED KHAN posted Fri November 30, 2018 03:36 PM

As we move into a digital age, work is all about communication and collaboration. Most decisions are the result of input and ideas from several contributors. Sharing insights, asking questions and getting feedback on your analytic content is now even easier with the new Slack integration with IBM Cognos Analytics.

You can now leverage your existing Slack workspaces to send messages on Slack channels, direct message groups or directly to Slack users. Messages can include an annotated image of, and a link to your analytic content.

As you find something interesting, click on the Share icon to get started. Select the Slack workspace you’d like to share on and you can now begin annotating a screenshot of your asset.

Choosing a workspace

Annotation Toolbar
You can annotate using a textbox, an arrow, draw using the pen, create a rectangle and even crop your screenshot.

 Annotation Options

Typing in the Slack channel or username populates a list from your Slack workspace from where you can select the one you want and Voila!

 Choosing a channel
A link to your asset and the annotated screenshot will then be sent on Slack along with your message.

Anything new on the Microsoft Teams integration?

Wed December 12, 2018 05:33 PM

@Clent Stracner an integration with Microsoft Teams is definitely something we will be looking into once the Microsoft Teams API fully goes GA

This is a great addition! Any information on if or when support for Microsoft Teams will be added?

Hi @Nick Waters,

My last suggestion would be to make sure your server is able to reach Slack. This could be something specific to your environment and I would suggest logging a support ticket and they'll be happy to walk you through it.

I will soon be recording a tutorial on how to integrate with Slack and will add the link here when it is ready

Hi Mohammed - yes I did follow the steps outlined in the documentation. The redirect URL matches the URLs I see coming in the Error below.

Hi @Nick Waters, did you add the Redirect URL in your Slack application already?

Please take a look at steps 9-12 in the documentation and let me know if it works for you

Solved - no spaces in the Workspace Name.

Wed December 05, 2018 07:02 AM

Gosh - what a procedure..
For the workspace name, do I use the name (words) I added in the Slack API? not the OAuth Access Token?
It says my workspace name doesnt look like a valid Slack workspace.  When using the token it fails to connect when trying to Test.

I get errors following the technical documentation on how to setup...

OAuth Error: redirect_uri did not match any configured URIs.
Passed URI : http://SERVERNAME:9300/bi/v1/collaboration/auth/slack?redirect_uri=http://SERVERNAME:9300/bi/v1/collaboration/auth/slack
Allowed URI : http://SERVERNAME:9300/bi/v1/collaboration/auth/slack
Allowed URI : https://SERVERNAME:9300/bi/v1/collaboration/auth/slack

If I goto the URL directly I see the following error:
Error 441: Unauthorized

Hi @Gill Staniland, I am glad it helped!

To avoid confusion for our users, if no collaboration platforms (such as Slack) are configured, the Send tab won't be shown. Please check out the documentation here to see how you can integrate Slack with Cognos Analytics. Hope it helps!

Thx for the blog post.  How does one set up the Slack option?  I don't see the new Send tab under Share.
