Installing Cognos in 11.1

Thinking of moving to the latest version of Cognos Analytics there are some things you should know about the installation process.

First things first: Remember to always take a content store or a full content deployment backup before upgrading.

With that friendly reminder out of the way, let’s talk about what has changed with the installer in 11.1.X.

You were telling us that the old installer was slow to start and launch. Based on that and other feedback we looked at a number of different options to make the overall install experience better and faster.

We have broken the installer into two parts:

  1. A lightweight installer(.exe)
  2. A repository(.zip)

The repository has two flavors one labeled server and the other labelled client.

The server repository contains the options to install the server (content tier, application tier and gateway tier), and life cycle manager

The client repository contains the options to install Framework Manager, Cube Designer, Dynamic Query Analyzer, and Life Cycle Manager.

Since the installer can be used regardless of repo you only need three parts to get Cognos up and running including all the client tools.

To get started download the installer and repository for your operating system. You can find the part numbers here: https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ibm10737087

Run the installer and after clicking next a couple times you will then be asked to pick a repository location. Point to where either the server or client repo is located and you are off to the races.

You can continue to upgrade your existing 11.0.X environment over top with this new installer.

If for some reason the installation doesn’t go quite as planned the system is smart enough to create a new directory  (install_backup) and place anything found in your preserve.txt in it.

When a successful installation has been completed then copy the contents found in that install_backup folder and paste them into the location where the install was successful.

Simply install the version of Cognos that you want into a new directory and copy the contents of the install_backup into the new install location.

Again, remember to always take a content store or a full content deployment backup before upgrading.

There is now way you can do a silent install of e.g. Framework Manager. All developers must do it manually.
