Reporting Enhancements in Cognos Analytics 11.0.3

Cognos Analytics 11.0.3 brings with it several enhancements that customers have been waiting for.

MULTI-PACKAGE REPORTING
Report authors can create a single report leveraging data from multiple packages. This new feature is only available for packages that use dynamic query mode.

By default, the first package listed under Source will be used as the ‘default package’. Cognos checks the default package for its capabilities and routing rules at run time and applies these to the report. As a result, capabilities and routing rules set on non-default packages will be ignored. Report authors can choose to change the default package by right click on the appropriate package name and choose ‘set default package’. Deleting a package is available on non-default packages only. Deleting a package will also remove all queries and data items referencing it. If this is not the desired behavior, please use replace package instead.

In the current release, a query can reference only a single package, meaning cross-package joins are not available. Drill through is supported only for the default package. We would like to collect customer feedback through RFE community to determine the improvements needed on this feature and they will be considered for future releases.

DATA LIST
Active report performance suffers when trying to render a report with large data volumes. The main use case of presenting large volume of data is in a list format.

The Data List is a new control available for Active Reports. It provides better performance than a regular list as it is rendered on the client machine instead of the Cognos server.

Authoring a data list is no different than authoring a regular list. Below is a list of properties that are available for data lists:

  • The list is scrollable by default, and a report author can control the height of the scrollable area.

  • The list headers are pinned.

  • A report author can control whether a column is sortable.

  • Column width can be adjusted.

  • Microcharts can be built into the columns to represent values between -1 and 1.

  • Report authors can specify a sequence of colors to the rows.

FILTER TEXT

As a report author, you can add text that shows the filters that are applied to the report. The filter text object can be formatted like a regular text object and it is available as part of the report layout for printing.

To add filter text to the report, click the filter icon from the on-demand toolbar and select ‘Insert Filter Text’. The filter text is dynamically updated when report consumers change filter selections in Interactive Viewer.
