The Master-Detail relationship in a report provides users a clear, contextual, and dynamic way to explore data. It displays a high-level overview (the master) alongside nested objects containing related, context-specific details (the detail) within the same report.
While Master-Detail relationships already existed in Cognos Reporting for certain objects, release 12.1.1 extends this capability to 11.1 visualizations, making it available across all reporting objects. This means users can now combine visualizations, maps, summary tables, lists, and other objects as nested detail sections within a Master-Detail report. This ensures a consistent, fully supported experience for users throughout Cognos Reporting.
With this enhancement, users can continue to explore data dynamically without extra clicks, additional filters, or prompts. There’s no need to drill through to a separate report for details, everything is presented in a unified view.
This extension for 11.1 visualizations continues to support all existing features available in Cognos Reporting. Reports can be executed in all formats while preserving the Master-Detail structure, and they can also be configured to be bursted dynamically, providing personalized views of data for individual users. This improves efficiency while delivering contextually relevant insights.
