Imagine you have a really important, super-fast database in the cloud (like a bank's transaction system, or a live game's user data). For this kind of database, you need storage that's incredibly quick and reliable. In AWS, this super-fast storage is often called io2 volumes.

The Key Takeaway:

io2 refers to a specific type of AWS EBS volume. These io2 volumes are used for storage. Databases, especially high-performance ones (like those in AWS RDS), can be attached to and utilize io2 volumes for their data.

Now, AWS offers a service called Relational Database Service (RDS). This is a managed service where AWS takes care of all the tricky parts of running a database (like setting it up, doing backups, patching, etc.). So, you can have your important database running on RDS, and it can use those super-fast io2 volumes for its data.

What Turbonomic's "Support for AWS io2 volumes attached to RDS" means in easy words:

It means that Turbonomic, can now fully understand and manage those special, high-performance io2 storage volumes specifically when they are used by your AWS RDS databases.

Previously, Turbonomic would stop tracking your AWS databases if they switched to io2 storage. We lost visibility, meaning no optimization.

Now, Turbonomic sees and tracks these io2 databases. This means:

  • Holistic Optimization: Turbonomic gives combined recommendations for both the database's computing power and its io2 storage.
  • Smart Storage Tuning: For io2, it can increase size (not shrink), suggest tier changes, and right-size IOPS (up or down for cost/performance).

Essentially, Turbonomic now fully optimizes your high-performance io2 AWS databases for peak efficiency and cost savings.
