IBM's Objectives in Mainframe Modernization

By rene de vleeschauwer posted Tue September 17, 2024 03:46 AM

As enterprises strive to stay competitive in a fast-paced digital world, IBM has outlined a clear roadmap for modernizing mainframe development and operations. The core objectives of this roadmap focus on migrating mainframe customers to Git, encouraging the use of IBM tooling such as DBB (Dependency Based Build), Wazi Deploy, or DevOps Deploy, and integrating a CI/CD solution of your choice.

But as organizations begin this journey, there’s a need for tools that help bridge the gaps between traditional mainframe practices and cutting-edge development workflows. That’s where our Kobee comes in, amplifying IBM’s efforts with an additional layer of innovation and usability.

Let’s first talk about IBM’s objectives and see later the complementary role Kobee plays.

IBM’s first objective:  Moving Mainframe Customers to Git

IBM advocates moving mainframe customers from legacy version control systems to GIT, the de facto standard for version control in modern software development. Git’s decentralized model allows teams to collaborate efficiently, track changes across codebases, and manage distributed development projects seamlessly.

Second objective. Using IBM Tooling: DBB, Wazi Deploy, or DevOps Deploy and other

IBM provides a robust set of tools designed specifically for streamlining mainframe development and deployment processes:

- DBB (Dependency Based Build) helps manage build dependencies effectively, reducing complexity and improving productivity in mainframe application development.

- Wazi Deploy introduces a modern, container-based environment for developing and testing mainframe applications using cloud-native practices.

Third Objective:  Leveraging CI/CD Solutions

IBM’s strategy is to integrate mainframe environments with existing CI/CD solutions, allowing organizations to leverage their current tools while bringing mainframe operations into the fold. By doing so, IBM promotes the removal of silos between mainframe and modern IT practices, enabling a unified approach to software development and deployment.

In the next post we’ll talk about the added value Ikan’s Kobee brings.
