Efficient trace analysis is essential for IMS performance monitoring, and OMEGAMON for IMS for z/OS offers flexible options to help you analyze data in the way that best meets your needs. One such feature is the Group By display option, which can be accessed through the Specify Trace Filters (KIPATFL) pop-up panel.

You can access the Specify Trace Filters pop-up in two ways:

  • Enter / followed by 1 or F next to any trace ID.
  • Enter F next to any trace ID.

You must note that the trace filters you enter on this panel apply to ALL traces, not just the trace you used to open the Specify Trace Filters pop-up. The Group By display option, however, applies to all subsequent IMS ATF Group Summary (KIPATFS) displays.

The display of the IMS ATF Group Summary (KIPATFS) depends on the Group By option you select:

  • When you specify TRAN, PSB, REGION, or LTERM, the IMS ATF Group Summary workspace is displayed.
  • When you specify NONE (an enhancement introduced in APAR OA68060), the IMS ATF Group Summary workspace is not displayed. Instead, OMEGAMON for IMS displays the ATF Trace Summary (KIPATFT) workspace.

Filtering and viewing ALL trace data

You can follow the instructions below to filter and view all traces for detailed analysis.

  1. Enter / next to any trace ID, then enter 1 or F in the Options Menu.
Alternatively, you can enter F next to any trace ID.The Specify Trace Filters (KIPATFL) pop-up panel is displayed.
Note: The Specify Trace Filters panel relates to ALL trace data, not the specific trace ID that was initially selected (in this case, TRACE08).
  2. Enter the required filter criteria and Group-by display option, and press Enter to set the data.
Note: Pressing PF3 will discard any changes made in the Specify Trace Filters panel
The IMS ATF Options (KIPATFLP) pop-up menu is displayed.
  3. Enter 1 or S (ATF Group Summary) in the IMS ATF Options pop-up.
For the Group By display options TRAN, PSB, REGION, or LTERM, the IMS ATF Group Summary workspace is displayed, showing ALL trace data that matches the filter criteria (up to 10,000 rows), grouped by the selected option (TRAN in this example).
The IMS ATF Group Summary panel does not display a trace ID, as it is for ALL trace ID data.
Similarly, if the Group By option is set to NONE, the IMS ATF Trace Summary workspace is displayed, showing  ALL trace data matching the filter criteria (limited to 10,000 rows).
The IMS ATF Trace Summary panel does not display a trace ID, as it is for ALL trace ID data.

  4. Enter 2 or X (ATF Exceptions) in the IMS ATF Options (KIPATFLP) pop-up to view ATF Exceptions.
The IMS ATF Exceptions workspace is displayed, showing ALL exception trace data matching the filter criteria (limited to 10,000 rows).
The IMS ATF Exceptions panel does not display a trace ID, as it is for ALL trace ID data.

Viewing specific trace data

You can follow the instructions below to view trace data to focus on specific transactions, regions, or resources.

  1. Enter an S (ATF Group Summary) or X (ATF Exceptions) next to a specific trace ID.
These functions use the original (or modified) trace definition criteria as filters for the data to be displayed, rather than the filters entered in the Specify Trace Filters panel, which filter ALL trace data. However, the ATF Group Summary option does apply any Group By display option specified in that panel.
The original (to be modified) trace definition data can be viewed by entering M next to a specific trace ID.

  2. Enter S next to a specific trace ID to view the ATF Group Summary for that trace.
For the Group By display options TRAN, PSB, REGION, or LTERM, the IMS ATF Group Summary workspace is displayed, showing specific trace data that matches the original or modified trace definition criteria (limited to 10,000 rows) and is grouped by the selected option (TRAN in this case).
The IMS ATF Group Summary panel displays a trace ID as it is for a specific trace ID (TRACE08 in this example).
Similarly, if the Group By option is set to NONE, the IMS ATF Trace Summary workspace is displayed, showing specific trace data that matches the original or modified trace definition criteria, limited to 10,000 rows.
The IMS ATF Trace Summary paneldisplay a trace ID as it is for a specific trace ID (TRACE08 in this example).

  3. Enter X next to a specific trace ID to view the ATF Exceptions for that trace.
The IMS ATF Exceptions workspace is displayed, showing specific trace exception data that matches the original or modified trace definition criteria (limited to 10,000 rows).
The IMS ATF Exceptions panel does display a trace ID, as it is for a specific trace ID (TRACE08 in this example).
