Introducing Workload Set - Ordered Parking of Cloud Workloads

By Rajesh Kanna posted 4 hours ago

IBM Turbonomic Release for General Availability from 8.16.5!

Harness the full power of your cloud investment! Many organizations grapple with spiraling costs, often due to unoptimized resources. Accelerating your cost optimization journey with Turbonomic Parking, we are excited to introduce our new "Workload Set" feature, providing high convenience over grouping Parkable workloads and eliminate wasteful spend using ordered parking method.

Am I using Turbonomic Parking for my Cloud Resources effectively & achieve Cost optimization goals? Yes! So?

Is that with the existing support coverage of your Public Cloud services/workloads? Yes & What's New?

Now you could group your Parkable Cloud workloads running your application/business processes in the form of "Workload Set", in sequential order and enable absolute time delay over the Parking actions!

Introducing Workload Set in Turbonomic Parking

How it Works?

"Workload Set" in Turbonomic Parking  is to realize cost optimization at scale with ease through Parking actions in an sequential/ordered manner, by organizing your parkable public cloud workloads deployed to run your business applications which are integrated by technical architecture similarities

Common Use Case problem:

Running your Application stack in Public cloud: Getting tired of Parking their services/workloads individually and using multiple parking schedules?

How it is Solved in two steps?

1. Create Workload Set

  • IBM Turbonomic realize the potential of enabling the Workloads grouping capability and execute Parking actions to the scope of application stack specific workloads, where your Web, App & Database servers comes together into a "Workload Set" that persists only in the Purview of Parking
  • Each workload could be different by itself, in terms of Cloud service (say, VM, Database & Database server are deployed to run your Business application) whose usage needs to be managed effectively
  • Apply your search and filter capabilities in the Turbonomic Parking, that allows you to narrow down to the scope of workloads specific to your application stack

2. Enabling Simultaneous Parking actions with "Absolute" Time delay

  • Absolute Start & Stop action time delays are provided against each of the Workload added into the Workload Set
  • With the above example where each workload (VMs) has a specific Start and Stop Time delay. Upon executing a "Start" Parking action,
    • First workload in the order takes the start action immediately
    • Second workload in the order takes 5 mins delay after the initial action was triggered
    • Third workload in the order takes 10 mins delay after the initial action was triggered
  • Delay will provide the user defined cool down period between workloads, based on their nature of deployment and load factors

Why "Workload Set" matters the most for your business

Operational quest

Human Error and Inconsistency: Manually tracking usage patterns at the individual workload level

Ineffective Cost Savings and Missed Opportunities: Without a systematic and scoped approach, it's very difficult to achieve optimal cost savings

How will you see the benefits?

Simplified Management and Automation: Workload Set grouping allows you to define and apply parking schedules or policies once for an entire set of resources, rather than configuring each one individually

Cost Savings$ and Optimized Resource Utilization : When resources are grouped intelligently, you can realize more cost savings and apply more sophisticated parking strategies

Real world Value Proposition

Scenario: Cloud DevOps Admin, works to categorize his services running their business applications in a shared services model.

Goal: As an IBM Turbonomic user persona, the workloads discovered from their shared services accounts/subscriptions/projects to be grouped together. Providing the ability to execute parking actions on each group to realize cost savings

Application: Workloads based on the application names/business owners tagged to be formed under separate "Workload Set", there by it will become feasible to apply parking schedules on each "Workload Set' and obtain "cost savings" (result) as expected

Conclusion

IBM Turbonomic supports Workload Set Parking from 8.16.5 that plays the catalyst role in your day in life Parking operations. By simplifying the process of executing Parking actions at scale over a scope of workloads and automating them using Parking policies. Time delay function would evolve at scale in the future of Turbonomic Parking, reflecting the obsession for continuous optimization experience in your business organization
