Did you know that you can use IBM® Z OMEGAMON® AI for z/OS® 6.1 and IBM® Z OMEGAMON® AI for Networks 6.1 to monitor activity with the new IBM® z/OS® Container Platform (zOSCP) 1.1 offering that just went GA on March 15, 2024?   In this Blog, we will describe how you can use these OMEGAMON products to monitor the system and network activity related to zOSCP containerized z/OS UNIX applications.

With zOSCP, you can now run containerized applications directly on z/OS.   This is in addition to the prior capability on z/OS where containerized applications could be run in a virtualized Linux environment running in a zCX address space.   zOSCP containerized applications are z/OS UNIX applications that run in regular z/OS address spaces via podman or the other Open Source tools available to run zOSCP containerized applications.

Because zOSCP containerized applications are z/OS UNIX applications their usage can be monitored using the IBM Z OMEGAMON AI for z/OS 6.1 z/OS UNIX workspaces.   Let's login to the enhanced 3270UI to start monitoring the usage of the zOSCP z/OS UNIX containerized applications.     From the following main OMEGAMON display we will choose the z/OS tab to go to the IBM Z OMEGAMON AI for z/OS 6.1 product:

We will then bring up the bookmark list like in a web browser where you see the UNIX and DVIPA1 saved bookmarks:

Selecting the UNIX bookmark we will go directly to  z/OS UNIX System Services Overview showing the podman commands that have been started to run zOSCP z/OS UNIX containerized applications:

From here you can drill down to see the z/OS UNIX specific details related to a specific podman command:

You can also drill down and  view the CPU and memory usage details:

And you can drill down and view the related z/OS UNIX file system activity:

Now if we want to view the network related data for zOSCP z/OS UNIX containerized applications we can go to the IBM Z OMEGAMON AI for Networks 6.1 product.   Let's go there directly from this display to the DVIPA overview using the DVIPA1 saved bookmark where you can view the network DVIPA addresses used by active zOSCP z/OS UNIX containerized applications:

From this display we scroll to the right to see more data, including the job names for the application address spaces running the zOSCP z/OS UNIX containerized applications:
