AI has taken the world space by storm, and it has come to the point where no meeting concludes without mentioning AI, LLM, or MCP at least three times. Since my expertise is in APIs, I thought I should take some time to explain the impact of AI abundance in the API space.

There are essentially two ways AI touches APIs:

1. AI as a productivity tool: how you can incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning to create agents that help you go through some API lifecycle stages faster or alert you on things out of ordinary
2. AI — API interoperability: how your APIs interact with AI agents to drive business through agents, and secure your APIs from malicious activity originating from these integrations

API professionals should watch out for and (re)design their API investments considering these impacts to make sure that they protect and expand their API revenues, and increase the rate of return on their API investments.
