IBM OMEGAMON for Db2 – Q2 2025 enhancements delivered (PH65409/UO03900)

By Matthias Tschaffler posted 2 days ago

With each new release, IBM OMEGAMON for Db2 continues to evolve in lockstep with Db2 z/OS advancements, offering users deeper insight and greater control over their Db2 environments.

With the latest enhancements introduced in Q2 of 2025 via APAR PH65409 (PTF UO03900, Fixpak 5.5.0-TIV-KD5-FP0017), the OMEGAMON for Db2 team has yet again delivered another set up significant updates.

EDM Pool Tuning: Support for Db2 13 Epic 25029 Counters

The new counters introduced by Db2 13 Epic 25029 - designed to externalize statistics for EDM pool optimization - are now integrated into the following parts:

  • Batch RECTRACE report
  • Performance Expert (PE) Client
  • Enhanced 3270 UI panel KDPEDMN, including PDS history

These statistics provide more granularity to help identify inefficiencies in EDM usage and streamline memory allocation strategies.

Workfile Usage Visibility: Support for Db2 13 Epic 26410

OMEGAMON has extended its performance Reporting capabilities by supporting the Sort Workfile instrumentation enhancements introduced in Db2 13 Epic 26410 to help monitor sort work file usage. This is now available in the Batch RECTRACE report for IFCID 2, 96 and 106.

Example of RECTRACE output for the respective IFCID 2 section:

This allows for better visibility and diagnostics of workfile usage, which is critical in environments with high sorting or temporary table activity.

Externalize zIIP statistics: Support for Db2 13 Epic 30861

Redirecting workload to a zIIP engine saves cost for mainframe users. With the extensions of Db2 13 Epic 30861 OMEGAMON Db2 users will now be able to see the zIIP usage statistics as part of RECTRACE and SQLACTIVITY report sets.

Example of RECTRACE output for IFCID 401:

SQLPA 5.2 Integration

Support for SQL Performance Analyzer (SQLPA) release 5.2 has arrived. This integration is now available in the Enhanced 3270 UI as well as the Classic interface

The Configuration Manager / PARMGEN parts have also adjusted to allow for parameter  KD2_PFnn_SQLPA_VERSION to recognize "5.2" as a valid and supported version.

This ensures that users working with SQLPA 5.2 can seamlessly analyze and visualize SQL performance within from the respective OMEGAMON for Db2 workspaces that launch the creation of SQLPA reports.

Other Enhancements and Fixes

OMEGAMON for Db2 also brings a range of operational and usability improvements:

    • Improved Db2 shutdown/startup handling in Classic Near-Term History and Enhanced 3270 UI Thread History.
    • The parameter KD2_PFnn_HIS_BUFSIZE now supports buffer sizes up to 16MB (16384), an increase from the previous 9,999 limit.
    • Increased max rows to 1500 for the HISTTHRD ODI table (via SYSTEM.PARMA "ZHISTDROWS"). The enhancement come in handy, especially when using the z/OS TEMS REST API as it allows to retrieve more than the existing 50 rows
    • Added "INSRT ALG SWITCH FROM TYPE 2 TO 1" introduced by Db2 13 Epic 24851 to Statistics and Thread Details Enhanced 3270 UI workspaces.
    • New fields added to the RECTRACE Performance Database for IFCIDs 125 and 230:
      • QW0125TI, QW0125QI → DB2PMFRTRC_RIDLIST
      • QBGBART, QBGBERT → DB2PMSYSPAR_230 (SYSPARMS)
    • Defect fixes
      • Improved compatibility and behavior in IPv4-only environments within the Performance Expert Client.
      • Fixed user authorization abend 0C4 in FPEVZMAI when logging on from the Performance Expert Client.

    Final Thoughts

These enhancements further solidify OMEGAMON's position as a must-have tool for Db2 performance monitoring and tuning. By incorporating the latest Db2 features and refining its interfaces, OMEGAMON continues to help IT operations teams stay ahead in managing performance, availability, and resource optimization in mission-critical environments.
