Mumtaz Mesania on Blending People, Technology, and Real-World Impact

By Maryam Sajid posted 14 hours ago

Be open-minded. That is how Mumtaz Mesania sums up her approach to the IBM TechXchange 2025 Conference. To her, technology is not just about features but about the people, culture, and impact the ideas presented at these conferences have once they are put into practice. With a wide-spanning career from Deloitte to Amazon and now IBM, Mumtaz knows industries can only transform once innovation has met empathy and strategy.

Mumtaz never set out to be a conference speaker. She once imagined herself earning a PhD and inspiring students as a professor. That same spark for curiosity and teaching now fuels her in unexpected areas.

One of her proudest moments at the IBM TechXchange conference was when a client attended her session, leading to a conversation that transformed into a project she is now presenting in 2025. For Mumtaz, conferences are opportunities to create lasting collaborations.

AI, Expectations, and the Human Factor

Of course, AI is everywhere but Mumtaz does not view it as the end-all. Instead, she compares it to a shiny new phone: it only brings value if you know how to use it. Most often, organizations chase after AI because of its mainstream impact without asking themselves the vital questions regarding Artificial Intelligence:

  • What do we actually want from AI?

  • Do we have the right data quality to support it?

  • Are people ready for the learning curve it enforces?

Through her experience, she has seen these extremely high expectations of what they think AI is completely derail projects. Companies want results in a matter of weeks, but then they are hit with the reality of having to train models, realign their workflows, and  clean an unfathomable amount of data. But Mumtaz says there is an even bigger issue: that cultural dispersity brought with AI. Younger generations are quickly embracing AI, while older generations feel overwhelmed and excluded.

This is why her message is not just about technical tools but about bringing a shift in personal mindset. AI adoption is a cultural metamorphosis that is in dire need of patience, clarity, and empathy.

Sustainability and Real-World Use Cases

Mumtaz’s session, AI Powers the Sustainable Supply Chain, is centred around an issue many organizations are facing today: Scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 is what tracks the impact environments face brought down by supply chains, from food distribution to power grids. It’s complex, messy, and often the hardest part for companies to measure.

To break this problem down to its very core, she will be using a real-world case study. At her session, she will showcase to attendees how AI was used to generate Scope 3 emission data and the challenges and breakthroughs that came along with that.

This breakthrough is major because sustainability is not an abstract idea. Extreme weather is already causing issues for supply chains worldwide. By deploying AI in sustainability projects, she showcases that technology is becoming the strategic lifeline for nature's resilience.

Bridging the Technical and the Human

What can seem like two adverse concepts can be brought together through building empathy. By asking continuous questions and having one-on-ones with your colleagues and fellow attendees, you can ensure communication never breaks down. This idea of seeing tech people and business people as partners, not as silos, is a philosophy Mumtaz takes to heart. It is what she believes IBM’s future depends on: pairing cutting-edge functionality with usability, governance, and continuous communication.

As IBM moves forward with plans for AI and asset lifecycle management, Mumtaz stresses that releasing features is not the end of the story.

“Just because you shipped it doesn’t mean you’re done,” she says.

She is focused on end-to-end user experience and product value testing, ensuring tools aren’t just powerful but applicable in real-world scenarios. Her advice for attendees is to come with curiosity and openness. This conference is not just a chance to hear from the industry's very best but also about broadening your horizon and listening to different perspectives, asking your questions and understanding where you stand and what you can do to shape your own role in technology as it is evolving.
