From Zero-to-One: Building What Doesn’t Exist

TechXchange 2025 is just days away, and the energy is building. Between the **can’t-miss livestreams** (from Dinesh Nirmal on the developer playbook to the Excellence Awards), and the **Sandbox experience** that turns Orlando into a million-square-foot playground of tech, this year’s event promises to be unforgettable. Whether you’re there in person or joining online, the conversations are going to shape how we think about AI, security, and intelligent infrastructure for years to come.

And for me, it’s also a chance to see familiar faces, reconnect with colleagues, and share a story that’s close to my heart.

Our Session: The TechXchange ChatBot: One Year Later

📍 Wednesday, Oct 8 | 10:30–11:30 AM EDT | S330C, OCCC South

One year ago, we went from nothing to something — launching the first version of the TechXchange Search Bot. It wasn’t perfect. It broke. It confused people. But it worked. It gave us a foundation. And over the past year we’ve rebuilt, retrained, and reinvented until it became a core part of how the IBM community connects with content.

That’s the essence of what I want to talk about: Zero-to-One.

What Zero-to-One Really Means

In software: it’s not adding more features — it’s creating the first capability that redefines the category.
In AI: it’s not about squeezing out a few more accuracy points — it’s about the first time the intelligence becomes usable and embedded in real work.
In customer care: it’s not answering tickets faster — it’s the moment when a customer suddenly feels understood, instantly, at scale.

Zero-to-One isn’t polish. It’s invention. It’s the leap from doesn’t exist to exists.

What You’ll Hear in Our Session

I’ll frame the Zero-to-One journey — how we went from idea to launch, the messy but critical first step that set everything else in motion.

Then my co-presenter, Conor Sibley (CTO, Higher Logic), will take you behind the scenes:

- How we actually built the bot — the architecture choices, the shifts from LLAMA to Granite, and the integrations across IBM platforms.
- Where the bot is today — the results and adoption we’re seeing inside the IBM ecosystem.
- Where it’s going next — the roadmap and opportunities for scaling beyond just search into a more intelligent community experience.

Together, we’ll show both sides of the story: the leap of faith and the hard engineering that turned it into a real, evolving system.

Why It Matters

Every company — and every engineer — has a choice. You can keep refining what you already have, or you can take the bold leap to create what doesn’t exist yet. The safe path is iteration. The bold path is Zero-to-One.

We’ll share the lessons, the gory details, and hopefully give you both the inspiration and the technical playbook for your own zero-to-one journey.

Looking forward to seeing you in Orlando — and if you can’t make it in person, catch the livestreams and join the conversation online.
