SAP HANA on the IBM Cloud platform provides faster provisioning, affordable scaling, and reduced downtime. IBM® Power® Virtual Server provides Linux stock images for SAP HANA and SAP NetWeaver applications.
SAP HANA can be deployed on the following IBM Power servers within Power Virtual Server data centers and can be deployed using the UI, CLI, API, or Terraform.
- Power10: S1022, E1050, and E1080
- Power9: E980
A SAP HANA certified instance or profile on IBM Power Virtual Server defines attributes, such as physical CPU cores and RAM, which determine the size and performance capabilities of the virtual server instance.
SAP HANA Placement Filters:
Deploying SAP HANA workloads in PowerVS requires strict compliance rules, which must be enforced during deployment and maintained during VM movements for planned or unplanned maintenance. Similar rules apply to other workloads like EPIC and IBM i, though with varying complexity. To ensure compliance and support, these rules need to be integrated into the PowerVC layer as placement filters, enabling proper validation during deployment, resize, migration, and remote restarts.
Few of the baseline requirement points for SAP HANA
- SAP HANA VMs are deployed always as dedicated cores
- SAP HANA VMs have minimum 4 cores for each of the VMs
- SAP HANA VMs should not be deployed on S922 VMs
SAP HANA deployment rules for # number of VMs allowed
If SAP HANA VMs are to be deployed then the rules are different for number of VMs allowed based on each system type. Below are the list of VMs allowed each system types
- S1022: 4 VMs in total
- E1050: 8 VMs in total
- E1080: 16 VMs in total
- E980: 16 VMs in total
Scenarios for more details SPP Count:
When counting VMs by system type using the Shared Processor Pool (SPP), the count is either 0 or 1. If any VM exists in the default or a custom SPP, it's counted as 1—regardless of the number of VMs or pools. Only VMs with dedicated cores are counted individually, whether they're SAP HANA, AIX, IBM i, or Linux.
Few Example:
- E980/E1080: Max VM allowed are16 VMs => 15 VMs + 1 SPP (15 VMs includes all VMs including SAP HANA or any VMs on that host using dedicated cores)
- S1022: Max VM allowed are 4 VMs => No VM’s on in default and custom SPP à 4 SAP VMs max can be deployed
- S1022: Max VM allowed are 4 VMs => 4 VMs - AIX/IBM i/Linux in default SPP, and 2 custom SPP à 3 SAP VMs max can be deployed
- S1022: Max VM allowed are 4 VMs => 3 AIX/IBM i/Linux VMs in default SPP, and 2 custom SPP, and 2 Dedicated Core AIX VM à 1 SAP VMs max can be deployed
Workload specific rules for Host types:
- SAP: cannot be deployed on S922
- EPIC: not supported on s922 and s1022
- IBM i: operating system is not supported on E950s or E1050s
- Power10 systems only support IBM i version 7.3 and above
- Power compatibility mode is set based on E880 or E980 type
- Only E980, and E1080 support the “high band storage connectivity group”
Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) on IBM Power for SAP HANA:
SAP HANA profiles on IBM Power use either SMT4 or SMT8 mode, allowing multiple threads per physical core.
- SMT4: 4 threads per core, seen as 4 logical processors.
- SMT8: 8 threads per core, seen as 8 logical processors.

SAP HANA VMs are deployed on the appropriate machine type based on the selected profile ID and its associated default system type.
