Impact 2014: Mobile Technologies Cognitive Futures

By Kendall Hatch posted Wed May 07, 2014 02:56 PM

There is no doubt: mobile technologies are revolutionizing both our lives and the way we do business.

In this new era thanks to mobile apps phones and devices we have moved from single transactions to engagement systems; from millions of PCs to billions of mobile devices; from the order of structured data to a vast amount of unstructured text and numeric transacations; and from static applications to services that are dynamically composed. The cloud infrastructure has freed us from the rigid information flow we once knew.

This new environment enables businesses to transform their strategies and operations in expansive ways that touch entire institutions. The sessions keynotes and workshops at Impact 2014 examined the choices firms have when embracing mobile options.

Firms can deploy cross-platform applications and optimize applications for customer retention and loyalty.

Analytics can turn information into knowledge and companies can continually adapt applications to provide performance that relies on new scalable 3-tier architecture Bring Your Own Device support a mobile workforce monitor security and compliance risks.

Yet our very interface with technology is changing too. We are at the beginning of a new technological phase—the wearable erawhere people and their environment are accompanied by the growing number of devices which enables cognitive and unpredictable interactions.

The very way we think is changing and in this new era of business scenarios require scalable robust analytical and cognitive models. This new evolution introduces new challenges to build manage and understand this new system.

These challenges are in the system of engagement—device interoperability; multiplatform development; extreme distribution; dynamic interactions—and in the system of insight: multi-dimensional context; social meets physical; cognitive modules; privacy and security.

There are plenty of cognitive and wearable assets already in the market: Disney MyMagic++ pay-as-you-live insurance Virgin Atlantics wearable tech Google Glass and Earlysense which uses cognitive models to help improve sleep patterns and promote good health.

IBM MobileFirst Services for Mobile Cloud Services and Worklight

IBM offers their mobile services around the coud and IBM Worklight. The mission creates a standards-based spatio-temporal support offering for IBM mobile platform middleware solutions.

Such systems need to respond to spatial and time situations. For example a risk management initiative analyzing vessel routes and movement patterns in the logistic industry would rely heavily on timing. In another example timing and location would be key in the tracking of retail coupon programs that analyze coupon use in a geographic or timeframe context.

This systems use analytics that are based on hindsight (descriptive analytics and diagnostic analytics respectively); insight (predictive analytics); and prescriptive analytics.

These systems and services include:

  • Mobile Cloud Services (MBaaS) which is composed by a set of services to:
    • Push notifications
    • CloudCode (scripting)
    • Location services
    • Data services

  • Development Services (DevOPS) which is composed by a set of services to:
    • Rapid application development
    • Performance & functional testing
    • Usability and accessibility analysis
    • Best practices Patterns analysis and guidance
    • Enablement for web 1.0 applications
    • Tealeaf functional and behavioral analytics
    • Security analytics

  • Mobile industry and App Services
    • Virtual Analytics Platform
    • Indoor location Presence zone
    • Augmented reality
    • Multi-factor  Authentication
    • Connected car / Mobile  analitycs
    • Smarter cities
    • Secure payment
    • Customized education

  • IBM Worklight
    • Nitrogen
    • Omni channel
    • Analitycs
    • Geo - simulator

Impact was a celebration of these technologies. Find out more at ibm.com.
