IBM Z provides the security, resiliency, performance, scalability, and sustainability that enable this institution, along with many other customers, to trust the agility of the platform. In the fast-moving world of global manufacturing, precision and efficiency are key to staying competitive. One organization recently achieved a significant breakthrough by leveraging advanced analytics in IBM z Performance and Capacity Analytics to optimize warehouse operations, leading to remarkable cost savings and performance improvements.

Here is a challenge that they faced:

This leading global manufacturer discovered inefficiencies in a critical warehouse application. Operating on a distributed platform, the system relied on a REST API call linked to a database procedure for real-time inventory tracking. Executed every 30 seconds, 24/7, this process ensured accurate data flow to automated warehouse robots. However, hidden inefficiencies were draining computing resources, affecting performance and operational costs.

During this time, the company's database administration (DBA) team, recognized for their expertise in system performance, analyzed Key Performance Metric reports in IZPCA, and uncovered a critical issue. The database procedure, executed every 30 seconds, took an unexpected 149 seconds to complete while consuming 53 CPU seconds per run. With multiple calls queuing up, the team knew something was amiss. Why was a routine operation using such an excessive amount of CPU resources?

The DBA team then started on an optimization journey,

Armed with performance insights, the DBA team engaged with the application development team to investigate further. Using data-driven evidence, they highlighted the inefficiency and collaborated on a solution. A minor adjustment was initially made, reducing CPU consumption from 53 to 46 seconds. However, a deeper analysis uncovered additional opportunities for optimization.

By refining the execution logic of the REST call and database interaction, the development team achieved a staggering improvement—bringing execution time down to just 0.19 seconds per call.

Key Takeaways:

This case underscores the transformative power of advanced analytics using IBM Z Performance and Capacity Analytics in optimizing business operations. By identifying inefficiencies and making targeted improvements, organizations can achieve:

  •        Drastic reductions in resource consumption
  •        Enhanced system performance and efficiency
  •        Significant cost savings

For enterprises striving for operational excellence, this story is a compelling example of how to leverage the right analytics tools to drive efficiency, reduce costs, and unlock new productivity levels.
