Managing CPU and memory hot-add settings is an important part of ensuring predictable, compliant, and non-disruptive VM resizing. To give customers complete control over how Turbonomic interacts with these configurations, we’ve introduced a new set of policy options that allow you to explicitly define how hot-add should be handled for Virtual Machines managed by VMware vCenter.
These updates allow organizations to standardize VM configurations, align with internal policies, and reduce manual dependency on vCenter scripting or maintenance tasks.
New Hot-Add Management Options
Turbonomic now provides expanded configuration controls through two dedicated settings in the Virtual Machine automation policy:
1. Modify vCPU Hot-Add
2. Modify vMem Hot-Add
Each of these settings includes the same three selectable options:
This structure allows customers to independently manage CPU and memory hot-add behavior with precision.
By setting these options through policy, Turbonomic can consistently apply the desired configuration when evaluating or performing VM resize actions—without requiring manual vCenter changes or scripting.
Why This Matters
Full configuration control
You decide whether Turbonomic should enable hot-add, disable it, or simply respect the VM’s current state.
Consistency at scale
Standardize hot-add behavior across hundreds or thousands of VMs using policies instead of manual edits.
Reduced operational overhead
Avoid custom scripts or vCenter tasks by managing everything directly from Turbonomic.
Supports performance & compliance requirements
Some workloads require hot-add to remain off, some need it on, and others should not be modified. All scenarios are now supported.
How It Works
Select your preferred option within the VM automation policy. When Turbonomic analyzes a VM:
-
If the policy calls for enabling or disabling hot-add, Turbonomic will generate the appropriate action.
-
If “Do Nothing” is selected, Turbonomic will not modify the VM’s hot-add configuration under any circumstance.
Any resulting changes appear in the Action Center and execution plans like other VM-level actions.
This capability applies to VMware vCenter environments where standard prerequisites are met (e.g., hardware version ≥ 11, VMware Tools installed, FT disabled).
A More Flexible and Predictable Automation Experience
These new hot-add configuration options give customers complete control over how Turbonomic handles vCPU and vMem hot-add settings, allowing VM resize actions to align seamlessly with performance tuning, compliance guidelines, and operational preferences.
