Am 23.6. kam der langersehnte Tag: das mAInframe Gipfeltreffen Schweiz 2025. Die Veranstaltung fand unter dem Motto "Say Hi to more on-prem AI" in Zürich statt. An diesem Launchevent begrüsste die Schweizer Mainframe Community die IBM z17, das neueste Modell in IBMs Transaktionsrechnerfamilie.
Das Event begann mit einer motivierenden Eröffnungsrede von Daniel Ruffet. Anschliessend erklärte uns André Spahni was es für Neuerungen im Bereich Hardware gibt. Ein paar interessante Neuerungen:
- Die z17 hat 60% mehr Memory als das Vorgängermodell hat nur bis zu 64TB
- 19% Reduktion im Stromverbrauch im Vergleich zum Vorgängermodell
Der Höhepunkt dieser Präsentation war natürlich der IBM Spyre Accelerator. Der innovative AI-Chip hat 32 Cores und erreicht 300+ TOPS.
Danach ging es mit dem Vortrag von Ralph Hess und Stephan Nef weiter in die AI-Thematik. Der Key Takeaway: AI Inferencing, muss nicht mehr abseits der IBM Z/ IBM LinuxONE Plattform passieren. Mit dem neuen IBM Telum II Chip und dem Spyre Accelerator funktioniert AI Inferencing effizient und simpel, direkt auf der Plattform. Durch Angebote wie IBM Db2 AI for z/OS oder das AI Toolkit for IBM Z and LinuxONE haben Kunden eine breite Palette von Tools für AI auf Z.
Nach einer kurzen Kaffeepause ging es weiter mit Tim McKeouns Vortrag über DevOps. In seinem Vortrag sprach Tim darüber, dass DevOps im Jahr 2025 einfach ein Must-Have ist und Mainframes davon nicht ausgenommen werden. IBM hat eine ganze Menge grossartiger Tools für DevOps Zwecke, wie beispielsweise IBM Test Accelerator for Z, doch DevOps ist abhängig von von den darunterliegenden Geschäftsprozessen. Wer DevOps als Teil seiner Kultur hat, ist schneller und agiler.
Der zweitletzte Vortrag wurde von Martin Wipfli und Dimitri Fankhauser gehalten. In ihrem Vortrag zeigten uns die beiden bis ins Detail wie einfach man mittels Ansible Logische Partitionen und Betriebssysteme auf IBM LinuxONE managen kann. Der Vortrag endete mit dem Deployment einer simplen Go Applikation auf die Plattform.
Vor dem Abendessen hielt Florian Nöll noch einen Vortrag über IBM LinuxONE 5 als vereinigte Hybrid Cloud Plattform, die Organisationen weltweit hilft das Potenzial ihrer Daten zu nutzen. Weiterhin erklärte er, die zunehmende Wichtigkeit eines sichereren Umgangs mit Digital Assets.
Der Regen endete, also konnten die Teilnehmenden am Ende des Events gemütlich mit Bratwurst und Bier an der Sonne zusammensitzen. Als Abschiedsgeschenk bekamen die Teilnehmenden noch ein IBM z17 Shirt und eine Tafel Mainframe-Schokolade. Vielen Dank an alle Teilnehmenden. Der Event war ein Highlight.

On June 23rd, the long-awaited day arrived: mAInframe Gipfeltreffen Schweiz 2025. The event took place in Zurich under the motto "Say Hi to more on-prem AI." At this launch event, the Swiss mainframe community welcomed the IBM z17, the latest model in IBM’s transaction processing computer family.
The event kicked off with an inspiring opening speech by Daniel Ruffet. Then, André Spahni explained the latest innovations in hardware. A few interesting highlights:
- The z17 has 60% more memory than its predecessor and now supports up to 64TB.
- 19% reduction in power consumption.
The highlight of this presentation was, of course, the IBM Spyre Accelerator. This innovative AI chip features 32 cores and delivers 300+ TOPS (trillions of operations per second).
Next, Ralph Hess and Stephan Nef continued with a talk on AI. The key takeaway: businesses no longer need to move their data off the IBM Z / IBM LinuxONE platform for AI inferencing. With the new IBM Telum II chip and the Spyre Accelerator, AI inferencing is efficient and straightforward—directly on the platform. Thanks to offerings like IBM Db2 AI for z/OS or the AI Toolkit for IBM Z and LinuxONE, customers have a wide range of tools for AI on Z.
After a short coffee break, Tim McKeoun gave a talk on DevOps. He emphasized that in 2025, DevOps is simply a must-have, and mainframes are no exception. IBM offers a wealth of great tools, such as the IBM Test Accelerator for Z, but DevOps always depends on the underlying business processes and the culture. Organizations that embrace DevOps as part of their culture can innovate faster and more agile.
The second-to-last talk was given by Martin Wipfli and Dimitri Fankhauser. They demonstrated in detail how easily logical partitions and operating systems on IBM LinuxONE can be managed using Ansible. The talk concluded with the deployment of a simple Go application on the platform.
Before dinner, Florian Nöll gave a presentation that showcased how IBM LinuxONE 5 as a unified hybrid cloud platform helps organizations worldwide unlock the potential of their data. He also explained the growing importance of secure custody of digital assets.
The rain stopped just in time, so participants were able to enjoy beer and bratwurst in the sun. As a farewell gift, attendees received an IBM z17 T-shirt and a bar of mainframe-themed chocolate. A big "thank you" to all participants. It was a very joyful event.
