Announcing IBM Business Automation Manager Open Editions 9.2.1

IBM’s Business Automation Manager Open Editions (BAMOE) continues to advance open-source cloud-native business automation. With version 9.2.1, we deliver critical updates and migration guidance, enhanced process management, and expanded platform support. This release focuses on migrating effortlessly to latest version, collaborate more effectively, and scale automation with greater agility. Key improvements include flexible workflow capabilities, added enterprise-grade Git integrations, modernized developer tools and detailed migration guidance providing structured approach to the migration process, covering everything from environment setup and project upgrades to operational and performance considerations, enabling teams to manage automation solutions even more efficiently across diverse environments.

Here’s what’s new and updated:

Workflow engine & runtime enhancements

The latest updates to the BAMOE Workflow Engine and Runtime focus on improving flexibility, resilience, and enterprise readiness. A new Process Instance Migration Service enables you to migrate running process instances from one deployment version to another. Re-triggering process instances is now more robust, allowing better recovery from failures. For dynamic, case-driven scenarios, ad-hoc process functionality has been introduced, enabling users to launch and manage non-linear workflows on demand. To support high-availability deployments, new guidance is available for running multi-node Process Services on a shared database, ensuring consistency and readiness. The engine now supports Oracle 23ai for persistent stateful workflows, aligning with enterprise database standards and long-term support. Operational control is enhanced with SLA querying and the ability to reschedule jobs directly within the runtime, improving compliance and responsiveness. Additionally, improved documentation and tooling around workflow evolution help teams manage changes to process definitions over time, ensuring smooth transitions and version control. These enhancements collectively empower developers and administrators to build, manage, and scale intelligent workflows with greater confidence and control in enterprise environments.

For developers, BAMOE’s new workflow engine features mean easier debugging with re-trigger support, more flexibility via ad-hoc tasks, better scalability with multi-node guidance, and smoother integration with Oracle. Enhanced SLA tools and workflow evolution support simplify maintenance, monitoring, and updates boosting productivity and reducing operational complexity in enterprise environments. Process instance migration guide helps developers move running workflows to the latest version following best practices. It ensures continuity, fixes issues in processes, supports agile updates, and reduces downtime, enabling seamless evolution of business logic while preserving data, improving maintainability, and enhancing flexibility in dynamic enterprise environments.

GitLab & Bitbucket Integration with BAMOE Canvas

The integration of BAMOE Canvas with both GitLab and Bitbucket Data brings higher business value by enabling seamless collaboration and version control within enterprise environments. This feature allows users to connect their workflow and decision models directly to Git-based repositories, supporting team-based development, automated CI/CD pipelines, and traceable change management. For organizations using GitLab or Bitbucket Data Center, this means tighter alignment with existing DevOps practices, improved governance, and faster iteration cycles. It also enhances security and compliance by ensuring all changes are versioned and auditable. Ultimately, this integration empowers clients to build, test, and deploy business automation assets more efficiently and reliably.

New BPMN Editor (Tech Preview)

A sleek, modern BPMN Editor is now available in BAMOE Canvas, VS Code, and as a standalone JavaScript component as Tech Preview.

Multi-DRD Support in DMN Editor

The DMN editor now enables you to model your decisions in multiple Decision Requirement Diagrams (DRDs), managing them as a single underlying Decision Requirements Graph (DRG). This enables modelers to break down complex decision logic into manageable, focused views.

Developer Productivity

Accelerators are now available as commands in BAMOE Developer Tools for VS Code which makes it easier to create new projects and configure your own accelerators.

Smarter Authentication & Repository Access

Renew expired sessions without re-entering all credentials manually and authenticate to private Git repositories for custom accelerators.

Simplified Upgrade Paths

Expanded and detailed documentation now covers supported upgrade scenarios & guidance to BAMOE 9.2.1 from 8.0.x, 9.1.x & 9.2.0, enabling guided and seamless migration.

Management Console Enhancements

The latest enhancements to the BAMOE Management Console significantly improve visibility and control across connected runtimes. Users can now view and manage process definitions, instances, tasks, and jobs from all runtimes in a unified interface. The console supports creating new process instances, retrying failed jobs, and even modifying job inputs before retrying. A new dashboard view summarizes all process instances, grouped by definition, offering a quick operational snapshot. Enhanced filtering and search capabilities make it easier to navigate large volumes of processes. Additionally, the console now includes improved visualizations with more detailed columns and the ability to view process diagrams in context, helping users understand execution flow. These updates streamline process monitoring, troubleshooting, and operational decision-making for developers, analysts, and administrators alike.

The BAMOE Management Console has been refined for better usability and performance in production environments for managing live workflows(link here).

Updated Technology Stack and database support

With IBM BAMOE 9.2.1, developers benefit from a modern, cloud-native stack. Quarkus 3.20 offers fast startup, low memory use, and seamless event handling for workflow services. Spring Boot 3.4 supports modern Java standards and better observability for integration apps. RHEL 9.5 ensures a secure, enterprise-grade OS for deploying BAMOE. PostgreSQL 17.x brings performance improvements and long-term support for stateful workflows. Together, these updates enhance developer productivity, simplify integration, and ensure scalable, secure, and efficient automation solutions across environments. With the upcoming release of IBM BAMOE version 9.2.1, support for an additional commercial database is being introduced: Oracle Database. Specifically, Oracle 23ai which is supported by Oracle through 2031 will now be compatible with BAMOE for stateful workflow execution.

Users will be able to integrate Oracle seamlessly by updating their pom.xml and application.properties files. Additionally, BAMOE 9.2.1 will include Flyway migration scripts and DDL files, enabling users to easily create or update the required schema (tables and columns) in an existing Oracle Database environment. This adds support for stateful workflows by enabling persistence with PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle Database.

Final Thoughts

IBM BAMOE 9.2.1 is a version update keeping migration facilitation in focus; It’s a strategic enabler for clients migrating to latest version for their business services within progress process instances to be migrated.
