Liberty z/OS Post #92- Messages.log and Application Startup

By David Follis posted yesterday

This post is part of a series exploring the unique aspects and capabilities of WebSphere Liberty when running on z/OS.
We'll also explore considerations when moving from WebSphere traditional on z/OS to Liberty on z/OS.

To start at the beginning, follow this link to the first post.

---------------

This is going to be quick.  Our message of interest is CWWKZ0001I.  This message tells you that an application was successfully started and how long, elapsed time, it took to start.  You should, obviously, get this message for every application you’ve got configured for your server and verifying that is probably a good thing to do.

Furthermore, if you’re investigating a slow-starting server, knowing how long each application took to start can help either identify the application(s) that is/are the problem or, at the very least, eliminate some things as the source of the problem.

That’s it.  Important message, two key facts.  You’re good.

Unless you aren’t.  If you do a little internet searching for that message you’ll find it and all the other messages in the CWWKZ prefix.  There are quite a few.  Many of them indicate problems starting an application.  If you don’t see the ‘0001’ message for your application then you’ve probably got one (or more) of these other near-by messages trying to tell you what’s gone wrong.

I think it is better to look for the ‘successfully started’ message and go digging if you can’t find it than try to anticipate all the something-went-wrong messages you might get and look for those, especially since it is possible we could add more things to go wrong in the future..
