IBM WebSphere announces extension of Java SE 7 support with WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5

By Dave Sudlik posted Tue March 05, 2019 10:42 PM

In the Withdrawal Announcement letter 916-143, IBM WebSphere had previously announced an End of Support (EOS) date of September 2019 for users of WebSphere Application Server V8.5 with Java SE 7 or Java SE 7.1. IBM continues to strongly recommend moving to Java SE 8, which is the latest version of Java supported by WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5, due to increased potential security risks on earlier versions of Java.
However, many of our clients have told us they are still currently engaged in migration activities to move to this more recent version of Java SE. For this reason, we are moving out the EOS date for both Java SE 7.0 and Java SE 7.1 with WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 traditional until July 2022, matching the end date of Oracle's extended support of Java SE 7. IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 with Java 7, as currently provided, will continue unchanged until this new EOS date.
This support is dependent on continued support for Java SE 7 by the various operating system (including z/OS) and software levels supported by WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5, as outlined in the Software Product Compatibility Report.
This extension of support for Java SE 7 only applies to the IBM Java SDK that is shipped with WebSphere Application Sever V8.5.5 traditional. It does not apply to WebSphere Liberty, which has a single support stream for all product versions. Support for Java SE 7.x with Liberty will still end after September 2019 to allow the Liberty code and included open source packages to move forward.
