NS1 Connect Release Update: Zone File Export using API

By Claire ODonovan posted 13 hours ago

We are pleased to announce a new addition to NS1 Connect Managed DNS features – Zone file export using the NS1 Connect API. This enhancement comes directly from your feedback – we recognize the need for greater flexibility and self-service options, particularly when it comes to managing your DNS zones.

What is new?

Previously, obtaining a zone file required contacting our Support team. With this release, you can now generate and retrieve your zone files directly using the API, whenever you need them.

Zone files follow a widely recognized DNS standard, making them useful for a variety of operational and automation workflows. Whether you want to maintain an offline backup copy, need artifacts for configuration management, or simply prefer having zone data stored in your own environment, you can now export using the API

Why this matters:

With API-driven zone export, you can now:

  • Back up zone data independently – whether for disaster recover planning, auditing or simply having an offline copy.

  • Integrate zone files into automation and configuration management systems.

  • Generate portable artifacts for auditing or compliance workflows.

  • Access a standard BIND/RFC-1035-format representation of your zone, compatible across vendors and tooling.

Considerations and Limitations

ALIAS and REDIRECT Records

NS1 Connect specific ALIAS and REDIRECT record types, as well as linked records, are included in the exported file, but they will not function as-is on other DNS providers. Customers will need to modify these records manually if importing to a non-NS1 system. The generated file includes helpful annotations to guide you.

Filter Chain Limitations

NS1 Connects Filter Chain and meta data are proprietary and cannot be represented in traditional zone files. As a result, Filter Chain configurations will not be encoded in the exported output.

UI Availability

Zone file Export is available only using the API for now. We do not yet have a target date for availability in the NS1 Connect portal.

Availability

Zone file export is available now to all NS1 Connect users using the API. Documentation for using the new endpoint is included in the NS1 Connect API reference. Customer can begin exporting their zone data immediately.
