IBM Db2 Query Monitor for z/OS: Enhanced observability with modern dashboards

By Carlos Guardia

IBM Db2 Query Monitor for z/OS 3.4 is a query analysis tool that monitors SQL queries across your Db2 for z/OS environment. It helps detecting SQL issues before they impact your business, allowing to  fine tune complicated queries so that they run as efficiently as possible. The new version enhancements include zIIP offload of key processes to potentially reduce costs and anomaly detection and reporting improvements.

OMEGAMON Data Provider (ODP) streams data to external analytics platforms, such as IBM Instana, the Elastic Stack, Splunk, Apache Kafka, and Prometheus. OMEGAMON agents monitor performance, behavior, and resource usage metrics of systems and applications on z/OS.

OMEGAMON Data Provider uses Push and Pull output methods, which are designed to be easily ingested by destinations outside of OMEGAMON (such as analytics platforms). Some output methods are for a specific analytics platform. Others, such as JSON Lines over TCP, are generic, and can be ingested by various analytics platforms. Analytics platforms that can ingest JSON Lines over TCP include IBM Instana Observability on z/OS (Instana), the Elastic Stack, and Splunk.

Db2 Query Monitor now integrates with OMEGAMON Data Provider to use the unique features of ODP that involve streaming data to external analytics platforms, such as IBM® Instana, the Elastic Stack, Splunk, Apache Kafka, and Prometheus. Currently Query Monitor will stream the following metrics:

  • · Streamed on interval boundary: Summary metrics
  • · Streamed as they occur: SQL Codes
  • · Planned to be streamed later in 2024: Exceptions, Db2 commands, and alerts

For example, the following dashboard shows in a single page the number and percentage distribution for the executed queries error SQLCODES, and the median Getpages performance information by Corrid and by Plan:

The following dashboard example shows the error SQL distribution over time:

These dashboards are just one example of the features provided with this new tool.
