Redefining Data Protection and Unified Storage Security with IBM Storage Defender 2.0.17 🚀

IBM continues to elevate enterprise data resilience with the latest release of IBM Storage Defender 2.0.17, a powerful evolution that redefining data protection and unified storage security. This release comes with exciting updates as follows:

Introducing the application-level recovery

In enterprise client environments, applications are made up of many connected parts such as databases, application servers, web servers, and other infrastructure elements, that collectively support critical business functions. These parts depend on each other, so they need to start and run in a specific order. Managing this properly helps keep everything running smoothly and avoids downtime. The application ensures that all associated recovery groups are restored in the correct order during the recovery process, helping to minimize downtime and reduce the risk of recovery failure.

In an application, recovery groups are organised in phases. Recovery groups can be distributed across multiple phases, where each phase depends on the previous phase. Within a phase, recovery groups are independent of each other.

Advantages of using IBM® Storage Defender®'s application model:

  • Streamline disaster recovery operations.
  • Ensure accurate sequencing of component restoration.
  • Minimize downtime and operational disruption.
  • Improve Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).
  • Enhance overall resilience against system failures.
Unlock deeper insights across the Defender portfolio using the RU Calculator

The Resource Unit (RU) Calculator helps you manage and track IBM® Storage Defender® Resource Unit (RU) usage. It provides a structured way to monitor entitlement, consumption, and product-specific metrics across the IBM Storage Defender portfolio.

With the RU Calculator, you can:

  • Enter their RU entitlement for IBM Storage Defender.
  • Select the IBM Storage Defender products in use, such as IBM Storage Defender Data Protect, IBM Storage Protect, and others.
  • Input product-specific metrics to calculate RU consumption.
  • View calculated RUs for each selected product.
  • Track total RUs consumed to date and compare against entitled RUs.
  • Access a history of RU usage updates.
  • Delete historical entries as needed.

IBM Storage Defender Sensors Auto-Update

IBM Storage Defender sensors now update automatically on all supported operating systems. This means no more manual updates; making deployments faster, easier, and more scalable.

IMPORTANT: Starting with version 2.0.18, IBM Storage Defender will enable auto-updates. To activate this feature successfully, make sure to install IBM Storage Defender sensor version 2.0.17 before deploying 2.0.18.

Docker-based connectivity for IBM Storage Protect servers

You can now run the IBM Storage Defender connection agent as a Docker container to link IBM Storage Protect servers with the Data Management Service. This makes deployment easier, especially on platforms like Windows and AIX where native installation is not supported.

The system where you install the agent must meet the following requirements:

  • The system must be running on one of the following supported operating systems:
    • Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® x86_64, version 8.7 or later RHEL 8 fix packs
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux x86_64, version 9.5 or later RHEL 9 fix packs
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server x86_64, version 15.0 or later SLES 15 fix packs
    • An x86_64 system capable of running Docker Engine version 28 or later
  • The IBM Storage Protect server that you are claiming must be running IBM Storage Protect 8.1.18 or later versions.
  • Must be able to connect with IBM Storage Defender directly or through an HTTPS proxy.
