Collaborative Planning and Analysis Using Chat

Workspace Chat allows you to Communicate in Context

Planning is a team game. Most plans come together with input and ideas from many contributors. The numbers at the end of the plan only tell half of the story. So much of the work of planning happens around the numbers: requests for new data, questions about and explanations of the data. In most organizations the plan requires negotiations, trade-offs, the evaluation of alternatives and in the end some important decisions. In the past this planning activity happened outside the planning system. Collaboration was done via emails or messaging systems or in the office corridors. This meant that the conversations were lost or difficult to place in context and the numbers lacked the background explanations that gave the plan meaning.

Start A Conversation

The planning analytics Chat pane lets you supply that context by having the conversation alongside the plan.

Conversations are anchored on a Planning Analytics book. Any user with access to the book can start or reply to a conversation. Just open the chat pane by clicking on the speech bubble icon at the top right of the Planning Analytics Workspace.

At the bottom of this pane you can start a conversation by typing into the "Add a message..." box and clicking Post.

Any user with access to the book can reply in the "Click to reply" box. Replies appear indented below the conversation starter.

If you've uploaded an avatar, the avatar appears beside each user's contribution. Otherwise, the contributor's initials will appear. The top of the chat bar shows all participants in the chat.

Track the Activity

When new posts are added to a book, the chat flag on the book is updated so you can see which books have new posts.

Supply the Why

By collaborating the the chat pane rather than via email or other messaging system you can provide the explanations and decisions that drove the plan. You not only see what the number is. You can see how the team came up with the number.
