Want to Find Optimization Opportunities 50% Faster? Introducing the Turbonomic Containers Tab

By Amil Shah posted yesterday

The new Turbonomic Container Tab delivers all the optimization actions you care about in one place.

Feature Release: Phase 1 Available in 8.16.6

At IBM Turbonomic, we’re thrilled 🎉 to introduce our latest new feature: the Container Tab, a transformative enhancement to our user interface designed to revolutionize how DevOps teams and platform engineers manage container performance, efficiency, cost savings, and resiliency. As a leader in application resource management and finops optimization, Turbonomic is dedicated to simplifying complexity, maximizing resource efficiency, and delivering measurable business value. The Container Tab empowers DevOps teams and platform engineers with a superior, user-friendly interface to monitor and optimize container workloads, unlocking significant cost savings 💰, performance boosts 🚀, and operational efficiency while enabling rapid identification of optimization opportunities and building trust in our platform.

A Unified View for Container Optimization

The Container Tab, seamlessly integrated into Turbonomic’s UI alongside the Application, On-Prem, and Cloud tabs, offers a centralized, real-time view of container workload performance. This unified interface consolidates critical metrics, actionable optimization recommendations, and prioritized actions, eliminating the need for manual searches or navigating complex container entities like pods, nodes, and namespaces. By centralizing health data and optimization opportunities for container clusters, the tab enhances efficiency, reducing the steps and clicks required to execute actions by an average of 50% 📉. This streamlined approach allows DevOps teams and platform engineers to swiftly identify optimization opportunities, resolve performance bottlenecks, and optimize resource allocation with confidence.

Key Features of the Container Tab

  • Overview Widget: Provides a comprehensive, easy-to-view snapshot of container workload performance, including the total number of resources (vCPU, vMem), the amount of resources reclaimable once optimization opportunities are executed, and the number of overprovisioned workloads. Customers can also view total savings, the investment required to stabilize their container platforms as identified by Turbonomic, and the total spend accumulated to run the container platform. This real-time visibility enables DevOps teams and platform engineers to proactively manage their container environments 🌱.

  • Top Actions Widget: Features strategically categorized actions into distinct buckets to help your organization quickly identify the most critical actions at any given moment and execute them as fast as possible ⏩. Additionally, the Top Actions views serve as a path towards driving automation by enabling users to create policies based on identified actions, streamlining future optimizations. This reduces the cognitive effort needed to assess opportunities, delivering rapid value, ROI, efficiency, and performance from your container platform. The categories include:

    • Lowest Risk: Includes non-disruptive actions unlikely to impact real-time, business-critical workloads, such as suspending nodes, SLO horizontal pod scale down, or provisioning resources.

    • Improve Performance: Encompasses right-sizing up or scale-up actions to proactively or reactively allocate sufficient resources to container entities, ensuring application performance, stability, and reducing the risk of performance issues or resolving existing ones.

    • Drive Efficiency and Savings: Focuses on actions to eliminate resource waste, reallocating unused resources to available pools or other applications/services while reducing costs for unused on-prem or public cloud resources 💸.

    • Optimize Pod Distribution: Intelligently moves pods across nodes based on resource needs, ensuring appropriate scaling and ideal performance with adequate resources.

  • Top Clusters/Namespaces and Services Widget: Includes familiar widgets that customers rely on, such as top clusters, namespaces, and services, allowing users to drill down into the container components they care about most. This continuity enhances usability and supports detailed exploration of workload performance 🔍.

Why the Container Tab Matters

Managing container workloads often involves challenges such as resource waste, performance bottlenecks, and resiliency issues. The Container Tab tackles these pain points with a streamlined optimization approach, delivering tangible benefits to DevOps teams and platform engineers. Crucially, it accelerates execution speed, enabling customers to implement actions faster and significantly increase the total number of optimizations performed—boosting action-taking by an impressive 20% 📈. This heightened execution pace directly translates into a substantially higher ROI, as rapid action-taking maximizes resource efficiency, reduces costs, and enhances performance outcomes. Additional benefits include:

  • Improved Efficiency: Centralizing visibility into container workloads and optimization opportunities reduces manual effort, enabling faster decision-making and action.

  • Cost Optimization: Through finops optimization principles, the tab highlights cost-saving opportunities by aligning resource usage with business needs, minimizing waste, and optimizing cloud spend, a core strength of IBM Turbonomic’s ARM platform.

  • Enhanced Resiliency: Real-time insights help address performance issues proactively, ensuring containerized applications remain reliable under varying workloads.

  • Boosted Productivity: With a 50% reduction in navigation time, DevOps teams and platform engineers can focus on innovation rather than routine resource optimization, ensuring platforms operate optimally, spending is thoughtful, costs are managed efficiently, performance is met, and developers, application owners, and end-users receive the best quality of service 🌟.

  • Increased Action Execution: With faster execution and smarter categorization, customers will see a 20% increase in actions taken, continuously yielding higher ROI by optimizing resources more effectively.

Availability and Phased Rollout

The Container Tab will be rolled out in phases, with new versions showcasing enhanced capabilities:

  • Phase 1: 8.16.6 – Introduces all new widgets, including the Overview, Top Actions, Top Clusters, Top Namespaces, and Top Services widgets. The Overview Widget will initially display reclaimable vCPU, reclaimable vMem, and overprovisioned workload tiles ✅.

  • Phase 2: TBD – Enhances user interaction by allowing clicks on the Top Actions widget to scope into the Action Center, where users can access detailed information on the bucketed and categorized list of actions 🔧.

  • Phase 3: TBD – Will add cost-related details to the Overview tiles, including total spend, total investments, and total savings. Cost data will also be tagged to each action, enabling customers to precisely understand the necessary investments and savings required 💡.
